Arsenal’s decision to reshape their midfield after landing Bruno Guimaraes has opened a door Manchester United have been eyeing for months.
Myles Lewis-Skelly, long admired at Old Trafford, has been offered to United as Arsenal soften their stance on the 19-year-old’s future. The teenager, once ring‑fenced as part of Mikel Arteta’s next generation, suddenly looks like a live option in a market where genuine versatility is gold dust.
Guimaraes arrival changes everything
Bruno Guimaraes’ £75million move from Newcastle United has not just transformed Arsenal’s midfield hierarchy; it has squeezed the pathway for Lewis-Skelly. The Brazilian is expected to command heavy minutes in the centre of the pitch, particularly in areas Lewis-Skelly has been groomed to patrol.
Arsenal are now open to a sale, as reported by football.london, with both Manchester United and Chelsea offered the chance to move. Both clubs like him. Both clubs have tracked him. Neither, yet, has committed.
That in itself is striking. In June 2025, Lewis-Skelly agreed a new five-year contract, a deal that looked like a firm statement of faith. United’s interest never really cooled, especially after his late-season uptick in minutes and influence. Those performances hinted that Arsenal were ready to lean into his development.
Guimaraes’ arrival has rewritten that script.
Carrick’s puzzle: one player, two problems solved
At Old Trafford, the equation is simple. Michael Carrick wants another midfielder and a new left-back before the window closes. Lewis-Skelly can do both. Not just cover, but genuinely operate in either role.
That kind of profile is rare. For United, it is tempting.
Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have already come through the door to bolster central areas, and a third midfield addition remains on the agenda. At left-back, Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall was the primary target, but he is off the market. Lewis-Skelly, by contrast, is very much on it.
United have turned to alternatives, with Jorge Salinas of Racing Santander also under consideration. Salinas is keen to stay in Spain, but United hold a trump card: they are prepared to meet his asking price, something Barcelona are not currently willing to do.
Yet Lewis-Skelly offers something different. He is young, homegrown, Premier League-ready in style if not yet in experience, and able to give Carrick tactical flexibility from day one.
Rashford, a swap and a sliding door?
The dynamics around Marcus Rashford add another layer of intrigue. Arsenal need a left winger. Rashford’s future, though leaning towards a stay, is still not completely nailed down.
An ambitious swap deal has been floated as a scenario that could suit both clubs. Arsenal would get a proven wide forward. United would secure a high-upside, multifunctional talent in Lewis-Skelly. On paper, it ticks boxes on each side: minutes, roles, refresh.

For now, United’s priority sits at left-back. But when a player like Lewis-Skelly is offered, priorities can shift quickly.
Arsenal’s academy drain?
There is also a broader pattern that will not go unnoticed in north London. United have already recruited Ayden Heaven and Chido Obi from Arsenal’s academy. Lewis-Skelly would be the third to swap London red for Manchester red in a short space of time.
For Arsenal, that is uncomfortable. For United, it is opportunity.
From Chelsea’s angle, the situation is more straightforward: if they table a lucrative proposal, it is believed Arsenal would find it hard to refuse. The same logic applies to United. A sizeable bid from either club could force Arsenal’s hand, new contract or not.
At Old Trafford, Lewis-Skelly would still primarily be a midfielder, but crucially he would stand a stronger chance of playing regularly in his favoured role under Xabi Alonso. That prospect alone will not be lost on the player’s camp.
Chelsea lurking, dominoes ready
Chelsea are not passive bystanders in this. They have already spent heavily this summer, including the arrival of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, yet another major outlay on a Premier League talent is not off the table.
Such a move could trigger its own chain reaction. A big-money deal for Lewis-Skelly might clear the runway for Enzo Fernandez to depart, with Real Madrid and Manchester City both watching developments closely.
So the picture is set: Arsenal, reshaped by Guimaraes; United, searching for balance and depth; Chelsea, hovering with financial muscle; and a 19-year-old who suddenly finds his future at the centre of a three-way tug-of-war.
