Arsenal Open Door for Reiss Nelson Transfer to West Ham
Reiss Nelson’s Arsenal career is edging towards its final act, and West Ham are trying to write the next chapter.
Talks are under way between the clubs over a deal for the 26-year-old winger, who has spent the last two seasons living life on loan rather than at the Emirates. First came Brentford, then Fulham. Now, with Mikel Arteta planning for a new campaign, Nelson finds himself on the outside looking in again.
He returned to Arsenal this summer, but there is no role for him in Arteta’s plans. The club are actively seeking a move, and West Ham have sensed an opportunity. Relegated and rebuilding for a promotion push in the Championship, they have approached the Gunners to check Nelson’s availability and explore what it would take to bring him across London.
Arsenal, for their part, are open — more than open. With Nelson into the final year of his contract, they view West Ham as a good fit and have given encouragement to the Hammers as negotiations continue over the structure of any deal. A permanent transfer is the preferred outcome in north London.
The key question sits with the player. Would Nelson be willing to drop into the Championship at 26, with his next move potentially defining the prime of his career? Personal terms have not yet been discussed. He is still weighing his options and listening to interest from elsewhere.
One of those options is understood to be in Portugal, where a side now managed by Marco Silva have registered their admiration. Silva knows Nelson well; he was the man who took him to Fulham two seasons ago and gave him a platform in the Premier League. That existing relationship offers a different route back into top-flight football, and Nelson is in no rush to close any doors.
Arsenal’s stance, though, is clear. They want a clean break if possible. A permanent sale this summer would suit their squad planning and their balance sheet. There have been enquiries over another loan, and if Arsenal do sanction a temporary move, they hold the option to extend Nelson’s contract by 12 months to protect his value and avoid losing him for nothing.
Nelson is not the only attacker who could depart before the window closes. Arsenal are also prepared to sell Gabriel Jesus and Fabio Vieira if suitable offers arrive. Jesus, linked with Napoli, has been priced at up to £20million, but there has been no formal approach from the Italian club so far. Interest, yes. Concrete bid, no.
Vieira, who has struggled to secure a regular starting place, is another candidate to move on as Arsenal streamline a squad built to challenge on multiple fronts but now in need of trimming and refreshing.
Even the goalkeeping department is part of the reshuffle. Arsenal are working to secure a loan for Tommy Setford to guarantee him regular first-team football this season, rather than leaving him stuck behind more established options.
For Nelson, the picture is sharper, if not yet final. Arsenal are ready. West Ham are at the table. Marco Silva is watching from afar. The next decision belongs to a winger whose career now stands at a crossroads: fight for a Premier League opening that isn’t there, or take the drop in division for the chance to rise again.
