Julian Alvarez: Arsenal's Top Target Amid Barcelona Interest
Julian Alvarez has been sitting at the very top of Arsenal’s attacking wishlist. Now the chase has taken a sharper turn.
Arteta steps up the charm
Reports in Spain say Mikel Arteta has spoken directly with the Atletico Madrid forward about a move to the Emirates Stadium. The Arsenal manager is understood to have made contact as the club weigh up a serious push before the window closes.
From Madrid, the message is clear: Alvarez is open to the idea.
The Argentine did not feature in Atletico’s La Liga opener against Malaga. Diego Simeone explained that the forward was not in the right frame of mind to play, a pointed admission at a time when his future is being openly debated.
The tension has spilled into the stands too. Alvarez was whistled by sections of his own support during Atletico’s first league outing of the season, a reaction that only intensified questions around his next step.
Asked about the situation and the forward’s future, Simeone kept his answer broad but telling. “We always aim to secure the best possible tools, just as we’ve always had,” he said. “And, well, let’s hope we can assemble the best possible squad between now and the deadline.”
No guarantees. No promises. Just a manager braced for late movement.
Barcelona dream, Arsenal opportunity
Alvarez has also been strongly linked with Barcelona. The Camp Nou is believed to be his preferred destination, the long-term dream. Atletico, though, have been reluctant to strengthen a direct domestic rival and have so far resisted doing business with the Catalan club.
That stance leaves the door ajar for Arsenal. A switch to north London is very much alive, even if Barcelona still looms in the background.
Spanish outlet Diario AS report that Arteta’s conversations with Alvarez have centred on a potential summer move, with the Gunners boss keen to sell his project and the chance to lead the line for the Premier League champions.
Arsenal’s rebuild gathers pace
Arteta has not waited for Alvarez to start reshaping his squad. Arsenal’s summer has already been heavy on statement signings.
Ezri Konsa became the latest arrival after completing a £51million move from Aston Villa. The defender joins a back line that needed reinforcing, with long-term injuries to Jurrien Timber and William Saliba stretching numbers.
Arteta was blunt about the need for more depth when asked about Konsa’s signing.
“We needed one more player, we had seven players in the defensive line, we know that that's not enough,” he said. “We have two long-term injuries, one with Jurrien, and one with Willy.
“And we wanted someone that didn't have the qualities that we already have, so somebody ideally with experience, because as a centre-back in this league you cannot play jokes, we know how important that position is, and I think Ezri brings a lot of qualities that we needed.”
At the other end of the pitch, the club’s biggest outlay of the window has been on Bruno Guimaraes. The £75million signing from Newcastle United arrived as the marquee addition in midfield, following deals for Piero Hincapie and Christos Tzolis. Hincapie joined permanently from Bayer Leverkusen after last season’s loan at the Emirates.
The message from the manager before a ball was kicked in their title defence was simple: Arsenal are not done yet.
Champions start strong, eyes still on the market
On the pitch, Arsenal have begun like a team ready to defend their crown. A 3-0 win over Coventry City at the Emirates set the tone, with Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard all on the scoresheet in a comfortable opening-day victory.
The squad looks stronger. The performance backed that up. But Arteta still wants more firepower and more variety.
That is where Alvarez comes in.
With Atletico wrestling with a restless fanbase, Barcelona blocked by boardroom politics and Arsenal armed with cash and a clear project, the next few weeks will decide whether the Argentine swaps Madrid for north London – or holds out for the Camp Nou dream.
