Manchester United's Pursuit of Alejandro Balde Gains Momentum
Manchester United’s search for a new left-back has taken a sharp twist, and it comes straight from Barcelona.
According to Jijantes, Alejandro Balde has decided to leave the Catalan giants, a move that immediately drags United into the conversation. His agent, Jorge Mendes, is now working to secure him a new club before the summer transfer window closes, with Old Trafford suddenly looking like a very realistic destination.
Balde was a key pillar of Barcelona’s success last season. The 22-year-old racked up 42 appearances in all competitions, playing a central role as Barca lifted both the La Liga title and the Supercopa de Espana. He brought energy, width and aggression down the flank, the sort of modern full-back profile top clubs build around.
Now, he finds himself on the outside.
Hansi Flick does not see Balde as part of his long-term plans, and his first-team minutes are expected to be heavily restricted this season. That shift has opened a door, and United are already standing on the other side of it.
Erik ten Hag’s side need a left-back. Tyrell Malacia has departed on a free transfer, while Patrick Dorgu is viewed more as an option on the left wing than a specialist defender. Luke Shaw remains the first-choice, but his workload and injury record mean United want a serious competitor rather than a stopgap.
Their ideal profile seemed clear: young, technically secure, athletic, and comfortable in big-game environments.
Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall quickly emerged as a prime candidate. United view the 21-year-old as a perfect fit, but that route is closing fast. Hall is expected to stay at St James’ Park and has entered talks over a new contract, with Newcastle offering him a role within the club’s leadership group under manager Matthias Jaissle. That kind of responsibility is hard to walk away from.
So the focus swings back to Spain.
Balde is not just a consolation prize. The Spain international, still only 22, has already amassed 168 senior appearances for Barcelona. That level of experience at a club of that size, at his age, is rare. He is known for his blistering pace, sharp dribbling and powerful ball-carrying from deep, traits that would instantly change the dynamic of United’s left flank.
For a club desperate to inject speed and thrust into their build-up, he ticks almost every box.
With Balde’s decision made and his agent actively searching for a solution, the opportunity is there. The question now is whether Manchester United move decisively enough to turn a window of possibility into a long-term answer at left-back.
