Aston Villa's Ambitious Signings: Mbaye and Harwood-Bellis
Aston Villa have rolled the dice again in the transfer market, landing two big-money signings in a single sweep: Senegal winger Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris St-Germain and England centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton.
Mbaye, just 18, arrives from PSG for 55m euros (£47m), a fee that underlines how aggressively Villa are willing to bet on potential. On the other side of the pitch, Harwood-Bellis joins for an initial £25m, with a further £4m in add-ons that could take the total to £29m, after Southampton stood firm through two rejected bids before finally relenting.
Villa go big on Mbaye’s ceiling
This is not a speculative punt on a teenager buried in a B team. Mbaye played 31 times in all competitions last season as PSG retained both the Ligue 1 crown and the Champions League, scoring three goals and adding two assists in a squad stacked with attacking talent.
He also arrived on the global stage in style. The winger featured in all four of Senegal’s matches at the 2026 World Cup and scored in a 3-1 defeat by France, becoming the youngest African player ever to score at a men’s World Cup. That record alone explains part of the price.
Born in France, Mbaye came through the ranks at PSG after joining from FC Versailles 78 in the summer of 2018. He rose through the academy and made his senior debut in August 2024 at just 16, another marker of how highly he was rated in Paris.
Internationally, his story has already taken a twist. Having represented France at youth level, he switched allegiance to Senegal in 2025, qualifying through his father. Now, his next step is the Premier League, where his pace and direct running will be tested weekly.
He becomes the latest forward added to Unai Emery’s reshaped front line, following the arrivals of Alejandro Garnacho, Johan Manzambi and Nicolas Jackson. The message is clear: Villa intend to attack with depth, variety and youth.
Harwood-Bellis to anchor a new-look defence
At the other end, Harwood-Bellis is tasked with shoring up a back line that has lost one of its leaders. The 24-year-old centre-back, signed from Southampton after a drawn-out pursuit, cost an initial £25m with £4m more tied to performance-related clauses.
Villa’s persistence tells its own story. Two earlier offers were turned down before the deal finally went through, underlining Emery’s determination to secure a defender he sees as central to the next phase of his project.
A squad rebuilt at speed
These arrivals come against the backdrop of major departures from the Europa League-winning side. Morgan Rogers has gone to Chelsea in a blockbuster £117m move. Ezri Konsa, a cornerstone of Villa’s defence, has joined Arsenal for £55m. Up front, Ollie Watkins has left a sizeable hole by heading to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia in a £51m switch.
So Villa are not just strengthening; they are rebuilding.
Emery now has a fresh, expensive core to mould, with Mbaye and Harwood-Bellis stepping into a dressing room that has tasted European success but lost some of its most influential figures. The question is no longer whether Villa are ambitious. It is how quickly this new-look side can turn that ambition into another season of serious contention.
