Atletico Madrid Fans Turn on Alvarez Amid Transfer Request

The scoreboard said 2-0 to Atletico Madrid against Malaga. The noise inside the Metropolitano told a very different story.

Julian Alvarez was nowhere near the pitch, not even in the squad, yet his name hung over the evening like a storm cloud. Every lull in play, every pause in the action, seemed to invite the same response from a section of the home support: whistles, jeers, and chants aimed at a player who was not even in the building.

The anger has roots. During the recent World Cup, the Argentine forward made his position brutally clear, openly requesting a transfer and signalling his desire to leave the club. Atletico fans do not forget that sort of thing. Not here, not under these lights.

So while Diego Simeone’s side cruised to a comfortable league win, a small but sharp section of Los Rojiblancos’ fanbase used the night to make their feelings known. Alvarez’s name, when it surfaced in the stands, came wrapped in hostility.

Diego Simeone's Response

Simeone could not dodge the topic. He never really does.

In his post-match press conference, the Atletico coach faced the inevitable questions about the reaction to his wantaway star. His answer was firm, clipped, and revealing in its own way.

"I have great respect for our people," Simeone said. "We are open – as we always say – to specific possibilities. You know this after 15 years, I always say that until the window closes, I am open to anything that might happen. That doesn't mean I'm talking about any specific individual, is that clear?"

The message was classic Simeone: backing the supporters, keeping the door to the market wide open, and refusing to pin himself to any one player’s fate. The tension around Alvarez was acknowledged without ever naming the next step.

What Simeone did stress, with emphasis, was his trust in the club’s backing and his obsession with the squad he takes into the rest of the season.

"Right, I’ve always said this, and not just now," he continued. "We always aim to secure the best possible tools, just as we’ve always had. And, well, let’s hope we can assemble the best possible squad between now and the deadline."

That is the tightrope Atletico now walk. On one side, a proven forward who has publicly asked to leave and now faces open hostility from parts of the fanbase. On the other, a coach demanding a powerful, unified group before the window slams shut.

The club must decide quickly whether Alvarez still fits into that picture or whether his future lies elsewhere. The clock is ticking, the whistles are growing louder, and the margin for indecision is shrinking.

While the board wrestles with the fallout, Simeone has little time to dwell. Villarreal arrive at the Metropolitano on Sunday. The transfer window is still open. The question is whether Alvarez still is – at least in the eyes of Atletico’s own people.
