Milan Targets Ruben Dias for Defensive Reinforcement
Milan have drawn a bold name onto their defensive wishlist: Ruben Dias.
With Ruben Amorim pushing for reinforcements at the back, the Serie A club have turned their attention to the Manchester City centre-back, whose situation is being closely monitored at Milanello.
Mendes link opens the door
Milan have been working hand in glove with Jorge Mendes throughout the summer, and the influential agent has already been in the city for talks with the Rossoneri hierarchy on a range of issues. Out of those conversations, one idea has gathered pace – testing the waters for Dias.
La Gazzetta dello Sport report that initial contacts over a potential deal have already taken place, presumably with Mendes acting as the key intermediary. The 29-year-old is understood to be on City’s transfer list, and his profile ticks several boxes for Milan.
His age appeals: experienced, still in his peak years, and theoretically capable of anchoring the back line for several seasons. Milan also see an opening in the fact that Dias’ stock has dipped over the last two campaigns, with injuries interrupting his rhythm and slightly dulling the aura that once made him one of Europe’s most untouchable defenders.
A complicated dream
The logic of the move is obvious. Mendes represents Dias, Milan want a leader in defence, and a top-class centre-back whose value has cooled is exactly the sort of opportunity elite clubs try to pounce on.
Reality, though, bites.
City have already lost Rodri this summer and are in no mood to wave through the departure of another cornerstone of Pep Guardiola’s era. Letting Dias go would mean ripping out a second pillar from the spine of the side in the same window, a risk the Premier League champions are reluctant to take.
Then comes the financial wall. Even with his recent injury issues, Dias would command a hefty fee and a significant salary package. For Milan, operating under stricter economic parameters, the numbers quickly become problematic.
So the idea is there, the conversations have started, and the connections are strong. But unless something drastic shifts in Manchester or on Milan’s balance sheet, Ruben Dias in red and black feels more like an ambitious fantasy than an imminent reality.
