Aurelien Tchouameni Transfer News: Mourinho's Madrid Midfield Overhaul
Aurelien Tchouameni walked into Real Madrid as the future of their midfield. Two years on, he may be walking out as the sacrifice that funds Jose Mourinho’s rebuild.
Liverpool and Manchester United have been alerted to a significant shift in the Frenchman’s status at the Bernabeu, with the player informed there are no guarantees over his long-term role under Mourinho. The message from Madrid is clear: nobody in that engine room is untouchable anymore, and Tchouameni is firmly in the conversation.
From cornerstone to expendable asset
Tchouameni’s position has been under quiet scrutiny for months. His future first came into question after his much-publicised training-ground clash with Federico Valverde earlier this year, a flashpoint that raised eyebrows but did not initially shake Real’s stance.
At that stage, the club publicly held the line: the former Monaco midfielder remained central to their plans, and any talk of a sale was dismissed. That stance has shifted with Mourinho’s arrival.
The new coach has wasted no time tearing into the squad. The defence has already been reinforced with Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries and Marc Cucurella. Bernardo Silva has arrived from Manchester City to inject craft and control into midfield. The rebuild is not cosmetic; it is structural.
And it is far from finished.
Inside the club, Enzo Fernandez remains a priority target. Rodri continues to be admired. West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes is being tracked closely. There is also serious noise around a renewed attempt for Bayern Munich star Michael Olise. None of those names will come cheap, even if the fees fall short of world-record territory.
Something has to give. In Madrid’s eyes, that something might be Tchouameni.
Liverpool and United sense an opening
Tchouameni has now been told bluntly that his place in Mourinho’s plans is no longer guaranteed. He is not alone. Eduardo Camavinga, another French international once seen as part of Real’s long-term core, is also viewed as vulnerable if further midfield signings land.
The ripple has reached England quickly. Liverpool and Manchester United have both been fully briefed on the changing landscape and are poised to move if Real Madrid open the door.
Liverpool’s interest is not new. They pushed hard for Tchouameni during his Monaco days, only to lose out to Madrid in 2022. The admiration never faded. With questions hanging over the long-term futures of several current midfielders and the club widening its search beyond domestic options like Adam Wharton and Alex Scott, Tchouameni is seen at Anfield as an immediate level-raiser.
Manchester United’s view is just as strong. Old Trafford decision-makers have followed the Frenchman for years and rate him among the elite midfielders in the game. Internally, he is seen as a player who could transform both the balance and the technical ceiling of their midfield.
Arsenal and Chelsea are watching from a distance, ready to react if the situation drags. For now, Liverpool and United are considered the best positioned should Madrid formally invite offers.
The price of a rebuild
Real Madrid know exactly what they have in Tchouameni – and what he could be worth to them in a summer of heavy spending.
With two years left on his current deal, the club believe his stock is high enough to command a fee in the region of €100m (£87m, $115m). Inside the Bernabeu, he is viewed as one of the few assets capable of generating a major transfer fee without ripping out the absolute core of the squad.
Push the price much higher, though, and there is an acceptance they risk scaring off even the richest suitors at a time when big clubs are growing wary of inflated valuations. Manchester United have already backed away from deals for Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson because of soaring prices. Liverpool, too, have shown little appetite to pay over the odds for domestic targets.
Tchouameni sits in a different category. His pedigree, Champions League experience and consistent performances at the highest level make his valuation far easier for recruitment departments to justify than many of the figures being thrown around elsewhere this summer.
A decision that shapes three midfields
For Mourinho, the calculation is ruthless but simple. To reshape his midfield in his image, serious funds are required. To raise those funds, someone with real market value has to go. Tchouameni fits that profile more than most.
For Liverpool and Manchester United, the equation is just as stark. Opportunities to sign a 26-year-old France international, already bedded in at Real Madrid and still with room to grow, do not come around often.
Madrid’s rebuild is gathering pace. The question now is whether Tchouameni becomes its financial cornerstone – not in the team, but on the balance sheet – and whether his next anchoring role comes at Anfield or Old Trafford.
