Balogun Transfer Battle: Villa and Barcelona Enter €60m Race
Folarin Balogun has turned this transfer window on its head. A year ago he was a promising forward. Now he is one of the most coveted strikers in Europe.
After a 19-goal season for Monaco in all competitions and an eye-catching World Cup with the United States, the 25-year-old has drawn firm, not speculative, interest. According to L'Equipe, Aston Villa and Barcelona have now moved from admiration to action, registering concrete intent to sign him.
Tottenham Hotspur were first to make a serious move, opening formal talks over a €60 million deal as they looked to bolster their attack. For a while, Spurs were out on their own. Not anymore.
Villa’s contingency plan, Barça’s rebuild
At Villa, the situation is clear. They are scouring the market in case Ollie Watkins leaves for Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League. Balogun is near the top of that contingency list, a ready-made replacement with European pedigree and the pace to stretch Premier League defences.
Barcelona’s need is even more urgent. Having parted ways with both Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, they are trying to piece together a new frontline before the window slams shut on September 1. Balogun has emerged as a central figure in those plans, a forward they believe can anchor a revamped attack.
Monaco, for their part, know exactly what they have. They also know what they might need to do. The club are understood to be open to a sale at the right price, using a potential Balogun windfall to reshape the squad, just as they did when Maghnes Akliouche departed for Paris Saint-Germain.
Spurs, though, have not walked away. They are keeping alternative options alive – including interest in Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush – but Balogun remains a priority target in north London.
Monaco’s stance and a coach on edge
Inside the Monaco camp, head coach Filipe Luis is fighting his corner. He does not want to lose his main striker, not after a season that pushed Balogun into the European elite.
“He is one of our players. I know he’s going to receive a lot of offers given his last season and his World Cup performance,” Luis said recently, laying out the reality of the situation.
“He’s a special player. You don’t find many players on the market with his attributes. If he stays, I’ll be really, really happy to have him with us.”
His words carry the tone of a manager braced for bids he may not be able to block.
Balogun sat out Monaco’s 3-2 Europa Conference League playoff win over Gornik Zabrze in Poland, yet the club have still registered him on their UEFA squad list. It is a small detail that underlines the uncertainty: prepared for him to stay, resigned to the idea he might go.
Countdown to September 1
Time is now the most ruthless opponent. Tottenham, Villa, and Barcelona all know the number: €60m. They also know the deadline: September 1.
Any club serious about Balogun will have to move quickly, before the market closes and Monaco’s leverage evaporates or hardens, depending on how the final days unfold.
Balogun is expected back in team training shortly, with a call looming on whether he features in Monaco’s upcoming Ligue 1 clash against Le Havre on Sunday. Play him and Monaco risk injury to a €60m asset. Leave him out and the message is obvious.
For Balogun, and for three giants circling him, the next few days will decide far more than a single team sheet.
