Barcelona's Defensive Overhaul: Alejandro Balde's Uncertain Future
Barcelona’s overhaul is gathering pace, and now even Alejandro Balde is standing near the exit.
Ronald Araujo has gone. Ferran Torres too. Joao Cancelo is on his way in. The message is clear: no one’s position is guaranteed, not even a homegrown full-back once seen as part of the club’s long-term spine.
United move to the front of the queue
According to MARCA, Jorge Mendes flew into Barcelona this week carrying offers for both Balde and Marc Casado. The super-agent first sat down with the club’s sporting director, then moved on to talks with the players, outlining what lies beyond Camp Nou’s doors.
Casado’s departure has been expected for a while. Balde’s? Not so much.
That changed when his name was missing from the squad list to face Elche. No injury, no rotation excuse that really convinced anyone. Being left out cut through the noise: this is serious.
Balde now has three firm proposals on the table. Manchester United are described as the leading candidate, with two other clubs pushing hard for the Spain international. For all the noise, club and player are not at the point of no return yet. Those close to the situation insist nothing will be signed off immediately, and the final call should take a few more days.
But the direction of travel feels obvious.
Cancelo’s shadow and a blocked pathway
The key to all of this is Cancelo. His arrival is close, and he is expected to walk straight into Hansi Flick’s starting XI as first-choice left-back.
For Balde, that changes everything.
Only a short time ago, he looked like the future in that role. Now, with Cancelo poised to dominate minutes on the left, Balde’s route to regular football narrows sharply. Add in his omission against Elche, and the chances of him staying start to shrink, even if Barcelona have not completely closed the door.
If he does go, the club cannot simply shrug and move on. They will have to act in the market again.
Interestingly, the replacement might not be a like-for-like left-back. Barcelona have long considered reinforcing at centre-back, and that idea is back on the table. A new central defender would allow Gerard Martin to slide across to left-back when needed, handing Flick more tactical flexibility and another way to reshuffle his back line.
Barcelona’s summer started as a reset. With Balde now edging closer to the exit and United circling, it is turning into a full-scale reconstruction of the defence.
