Barcelona’s pursuit of Julián Álvarez is fast turning into the transfer saga of the summer, and the message coming out of Madrid could not be clearer: “impossible.”
Journalist Gastón Edul has lifted the lid on the Argentine forward’s situation and painted a stark picture for Atlético de Madrid. Speaking on the player’s future, Edul said he is “confident that it’s very difficult or almost impossible for Julián to play for Atlético de Madrid next season.”
In other words, something has to give.
Barcelona push, Atlético dig in
Spain woke up on Monday to Álvarez’s name splashed across the front pages again. According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have already put 100 million euros on the table for the forward, a figure that comes despite Atlético’s fury last week and their strong public denial that any formal offer had arrived.

Reporter Verónica Brunati revealed on X that “FC Barcelona and Julián Álvarez’s agent had proposed a meeting for today. But Atlético de Madrid rejected it. ‘The player is not for sale. He has an active contract and we are very happy with him.’ They are counting on Julián Álvarez for the 2026/27 season.”
That’s not just a refusal. That’s a stance.
Atlético are not merely closing the door; they are bolting it and nailing it shut for good measure, insisting Álvarez is central to their plans right through to 2026/27.
Player’s priority vs market reality
The twist lies in Álvarez’s own preference. Edul reports that PSG remain firmly in the race, keeping the pressure on with their interest. Yet Álvarez’s priority, he says, is still Barcelona — even if the Catalan club’s financial package falls short of what others can offer.
That detail matters. Barcelona’s current economic reality means they cannot simply outbid the market. They have to win on project, on prestige, on the promise of a starring role at Camp Nou. If Álvarez is prepared to accept a lower offer to make the move happen, it hands Barça leverage of a different kind, even while Atlético refuse to sit at the negotiating table.
