Barcelona’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez is not over. It’s only been delayed.
All summer, the Catalan club pushed to prise the Argentina international away from Atletico Madrid’s Metropolitano home. Atletico didn’t blink. They refused to even sit at the table with a domestic rival, shutting down talks and forcing Barcelona to park their move – for now.
Alvarez has since committed to staying in Madrid at least until the January window. On the surface, that closes one door. Behind the scenes, Barcelona are simply waiting for the next one to open.
Jesus for now, Alvarez for tomorrow
With Atletico’s stance turning a summer deal into a non-starter, Barcelona shifted their attention to Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus to plug the immediate gap up front. The Brazilian arrives as a solution, but not the solution.
Inside the club, nobody is pretending this is a long-term reset of their attacking plan. Jesus is viewed as a short-term patch, a bridge to the striker they truly want leading the line.
That striker is still Julian Alvarez.
According to Spanish programme El Larguero, Barcelona didn’t just fail to land their preferred No. 9 – they consciously chose to keep their biggest financial bullets in the chamber. Journalist Santi Ovalle revealed that the club ring‑fenced the budget reserved for a marquee centre-forward rather than spread it on second-choice options.
“They’ve saved the money they were going to spend on a top No. 9 to go after him again,” Ovalle explained. “Barca doesn’t want Julian for this transfer window; they want him for a five-year project.”
That line says everything about the scale of their ambition. This is not a one-window gamble. It’s a long play.
Boardroom conviction
Ovalle also underlined just how highly Barcelona rate the Atletico striker.
“They are convinced, as we’ve been saying in recent days, that Julian is better than any other striker. So they’re saving the money they were going to spend on a new one to come back and explore the transfer market.”
That conviction has shaped every decision. Faced with a market full of alternatives, Barcelona’s hierarchy simply did not see a centre-forward they believed justified a huge outlay if it meant abandoning the Alvarez plan. No panic buy. No compromise on the profile they want to build around.
So they pivoted to Jesus to cover the here and now, while fiercely protecting the core of their transfer kitty. Short-term cover, long-term obsession.
Atletico stand firm, Barca wait
Atletico’s refusal to negotiate this summer left no room for manoeuvre. A deal was impossible, regardless of Barcelona’s desire or financial preparation. So the Catalans stepped back, not because their interest cooled, but because they believe time will eventually work in their favour.
They are ready to wait. Ready to move the moment Atletico’s stance softens, or circumstances change.
Alvarez, meanwhile, turns his attention back to Diego Simeone’s demands. The forward now has the first half of the La Liga season to re-establish himself fully in Atletico’s plans, maintain his level and stay fit, all while the noise around his future hums in the background.
The next move
For Barcelona, the roadmap is already drawn. The club are expected to test the waters again in January, exploring whether a mid-season move is even remotely possible. If winter proves too complex – and it often does for major transfers – they will not walk away.
The plan, as reported, is to launch a full-scale offensive in June 2027 to finally bring Alvarez to Camp Nou.
Barcelona have made their choice: one striker, one project, one long chase. The only question now is whether Atletico – and Alvarez himself – will eventually let that door open.
