Bayern Munich Denies Florian Wirtz Transfer Rumors
Bayern Munich have cooled talk of a dramatic Florian Wirtz reunion – for now – but the Liverpool playmaker’s name is still circling around transfer conversations in Bavaria.
Bayern shut down ‘shock move’ talk
Liverpool beat both Bayern Munich and Manchester City to Wirtz in the summer of 2025, paying around £116m to prise him from Bayer Leverkusen. It was a statement deal: one of Europe’s most inventive attackers, a German international, dropped into Anfield with the weight of a huge fee and even bigger expectations.
The adaptation has been rough. Wirtz has struggled with the intensity and physicality of the Premier League and has not yet hit the heights that made him such a coveted talent in the Bundesliga. That dip has inevitably triggered speculation that Bayern might try again, sensing an opportunity if Liverpool’s patience wears thin.
German reporter Christian Falk has moved to stamp on that idea.
“It is NOT TRUE: Bayern Munich are tracking Florian Wirtz and could make a shock move for the Liverpool player. My information is that this is not true,” he told CF Bayern Insider.
Falk underlined the long-running connection between club and player. Bayern courted Wirtz heavily before his Liverpool move, holding two secret meetings – one in Munich, another on Merseyside – before Arne Slot convinced him to choose Liverpool. That history, coupled with his mixed start in England, has kept the rumour mill spinning.
Yet Falk insists Bayern are not currently working on any deal and sees Wirtz’s situation in a different light.
“To be clear, I don’t necessarily share those concerns; I think Wirtz is performing better than he did last year. He has a new position in the team,” he said, while also pointing out that Jamal Musiala is still working his way back to top form after illness and previous injury problems.
Swap talk with Olise lingers in the background
The story doesn’t end there. Even as Falk stresses there is “nothing planned” between Bayern and Wirtz, another angle refuses to go away: a possible swap involving Michael Olise.
This is where the transfer puzzle becomes more complicated.
“So, you can see where some reports have taken these conditions and claimed that one plus one equals two,” Falk explained. “Of course, if Florian Wirtz were, at some point in future, interested in making a return to the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich would be the first team he’d talk to. However, there is nothing planned.”
Bayern’s current situation supports that stance. Vincent Kompany is bedding in a new system with Olise as the central fulcrum, mirroring the role he plays for France. Musiala remains tied down to a long contract. The squad is deep, and, crucially, Liverpool’s outlay on Wirtz was enormous.
Even so, Falk stops short of dismissing the idea of Wirtz and Olise effectively trading places.
“Everyone is hoping the former Crystal Palace star signs a new contract, but if not, and he decides for a transfer, of course Florian Wirtz would be a player who’s interesting for Bayern Munich,” he said.
“The German can play on the side or centrally. This would be a very interesting thing, and if you make a swap deal with Liverpool or sell Olise for a lot of money to Real Madrid, you have the money to make an offer for Wirtz.
“So, there are many, many positions which have to be discussed. I wouldn’t say it’s not true that Bayern Munich would have thought of that.”
For now, it leaves Wirtz in a curious spot: still trying to prove himself in England, still tethered to Bayern by history and logic, and still one big decision away from reshaping the attacking cores of two European giants.
