Kylian Mbappé and Vinicius Junior's Gesture at Elche
Kylian Mbappé, Vinicius Junior and Ibrahima Konaté stepped into Real Madrid’s trip to Elche under a different kind of spotlight – and it arrived before a ball was even kicked.
As both teams emerged at the Martínez Valero, every player wore a white T-shirt bearing the slogan “Todos somos caballas” – “We are all Ceutans” – a message of solidarity with the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta on the North African coast, gripped by a migration crisis after mass crossings from Morocco.
Most players let the slogan speak for itself. Mbappé, Vinicius and Konaté did not.
All three rolled their shirts up to around chest height, covering part of the message and the references to Ceuta printed beneath. The gesture immediately stood out in the pre-match line-up, a visual break from the uniform front presented by the rest of their team-mates and the Elche XI.
Mbappé and Vinicius then went a step further, taking the shirts off entirely before the traditional pre-match handshake. Konaté kept his rolled-up version on for longer, while the rest of the players from both sides continued through the formalities with the T-shirts fully visible.
The club had been here before. Earlier this month, ahead of a Champions League tie against Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabéu, Real Madrid supporters in the south stand lifted cards forming the coat of arms of Ceuta, with the rest of the stadium rising to applaud in a coordinated tribute.
That display formed part of a broader campaign backing Ceuta after a dramatic surge in arrivals from Morocco. According to figures cited by the city’s mayor, at least 72,000 migrants crossed into the territory on 30 and 31 July alone, many of them swimming around a border fence. At least 100 people died attempting the crossing.
While most of those who entered have since returned, as many as 5,000 are still in and around the city, living in makeshift camps or sleeping on streets and beaches. The strain has fuelled unrest, with some locals voicing safety fears, destroying shelters and blocking aid deliveries to migrants.
Against that backdrop, the T-shirts were intended as a clear, collective statement. Instead, the actions of three Real Madrid stars underlined how fractured the response can be inside the game.
Barcelona chose not to participate in the Ceuta initiative at all, while players at other La Liga fixtures wore the shirts as planned. Madrid’s dressing room, at least in this moment, presented a more complicated picture.
Representatives of the players involved have been approached for comment.
Once the political flashpoint faded and the whistle blew, the night lurched into pure football drama. Real Madrid nearly collapsed after throwing away a two-goal lead, only to claw back control and finally edge Elche 3-2. Carlos Espi delivered the decisive punch in stoppage time, settling a chaotic contest at the end of a long, charged evening.
Mbappé was on the scoresheet. Vinicius started. Konaté played his part. The result will fuel Madrid’s season; the images from the warm-up will fuel a different debate entirely about how football’s biggest names choose to engage – or not – when the sport steps into the political storm.
