Ben Godfrey Joins Rangers: Aiming for Trophies

Ben Godfrey has arrived at Ibrox with a point to prove and a clear message: he wants to help Rangers get back to lifting trophies.

The former Everton defender has joined on loan from Atalanta, with the Scottish club securing an option to make the move permanent next summer. At 28, this is not a prospect move or a gamble on potential. It is a defender in his prime, looking to restart a career that has stalled in recent seasons.

Game time has been scarce. After slipping down the pecking order in Italy, Godfrey spent the second half of last season at Brondby, where he made 12 appearances as the Danish side finished fourth in the Superliga. Solid, useful minutes, but hardly the stage he once occupied in the Premier League.

Now he steps into the glare of Glasgow.

“I am buzzing, I am really happy to be here,” he said, speaking after the deal was confirmed. The words were simple, but the intent behind them was clear. This is a player who understands the scale of the club he has joined. “I know the size of the club,” he added, calling it a “massive honour” to pull on the Rangers shirt.

That matters at Ibrox. Supporters demand more than talent; they demand that new signings understand the weight of the badge and the expectation that comes with it. Godfrey leaned straight into that.

“I am looking forward to meeting the boys and hopefully helping this club achieve what it deserves, which is silverware and exciting times.”

The bar is set there. Not stability. Not consolidation. Silverware.

For Rangers, the deal structure is smart. A season-long look at a defender with Premier League and Serie A experience, and the option to keep him if he matches the club’s ambitions. For Godfrey, it is a high-pressure platform, but also a clear route back into prominence if he delivers.

He has chosen a club where second place is never enough. Now he has to play like it.
