Billericay's Play-Off Win Marred by Alleged Racist Abuse

Billericay’s play-off triumph was supposed to be the story. A 2-1 extra-time win over neighbours Brentwood Town in the Isthmian Premier Division play-off final, sealed at New Lodge on Monday, should have been remembered for tension, drama and a season’s work coming to the boil.

Instead, the night now carries a darker headline.

Late in extra time, with emotions stretched and every tackle roared, Brentwood say a spectator near the dugouts turned that noise into something far uglier. According to the club, their first-team coach Alex Akrofi was targeted with “unacceptable and offensive language” from the stand — abuse they allege was racist.

The celebrations on the pitch were still fresh when the off-field incident began to dominate the conversation.

Brentwood moved quickly. In a stark statement, the club condemned the alleged abuse and made clear where they stood, both on the words used and the wider context.

“This behaviour is completely abhorrent and has no place in football or in society,” a club spokesperson said. “It is deeply disappointing and frankly incomprehensible that in 2026, individuals still resort to such hate speech in an attempt to demean others.”

They stressed their “unconditional” support for Akrofi, drawing a firm line around their coach at a time when football’s fight against discrimination again finds itself under the spotlight.

Billericay, the home side and the night’s winners, did not hesitate in their response either. The club confirmed that the spectator accused of directing the abuse had been identified and removed from New Lodge.

In their own statement, Billericay underlined a “zero-tolerance stance towards racism and all forms of discrimination,” adding: “Any such behaviour is wholly unacceptable and will always be treated with the utmost seriousness.”

On a night when rivalry should have been contained to tackles and touchline instructions, both clubs suddenly found themselves united in condemnation.

The matter has now moved beyond club level. Essex Police confirmed they have opened an investigation into the incident. Their message was direct: “Our inquiries are ongoing and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident, has any information or footage to contact us.”

So a play-off final that should have been about promotion hopes, extra-time nerves and a decisive goal now carries a different weight. The result will stay in the record books. What happens next, in the stands and in the courts, will say far more about where the game is heading.
