Brentford Agree Deal to Sign El Hadji Malick Diouf for £40m
Brentford have struck a verbal agreement with West Ham to sign El Hadji Malick Diouf in a deal that could rise to £40m, as Keith Andrews’ side make another aggressive move to strengthen their push towards Europe.
The 21-year-old Senegal international is set to cost an initial £35m, with a further £5m tied up in add-ons. West Ham have accepted Brentford’s offer and Diouf has been given the green light to undergo a medical.
Brentford land their top defensive target
Diouf has been Brentford’s priority defensive target throughout this window. Talks had stalled earlier in the summer, the move seemingly drifting into the background while other deals took shape. Then the door reopened this week, and Brentford moved quickly.
If completed, the transfer will mark a swift return to the Premier League for the left-back, who went down with West Ham last season after they finished 18th. For the Hammers, his sale would deliver a sizeable profit: they paid £19m to sign him from Slavia Prague just a year ago.
Diouf featured in West Ham’s Championship opener against Burnley but has been left out of their last two matchday squads as negotiations advanced. He played 34 times for the club last season, chipping in with five assists from defence.
A statement summer in west London
Brentford are building with intent. Diouf is on course to become their fifth signing of the summer window, following the arrivals of striker Callum Wilson, midfielder Mamadou Sangare, centre-back Jannik Schuster and winger Jaidon Anthony.
Andrews already has his side purring. Brentford opened their league campaign with a commanding 3-0 home win over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, a result that underlined the momentum carried over from last season’s impressive ninth-place finish. They missed out on European football only on goal difference, a near miss that has clearly sharpened their ambition rather than dulled it.
Next up is Leeds on Sunday, another chance to show that last season was no one-off – and that this revamped squad, potentially with Diouf soon added to it, is built to stay in the conversation at the top end of the table.
Rising stock for club and country
Diouf’s reputation has grown quickly. After breaking into the Senegal national team last year, he earned a place at the World Cup this summer and made four appearances at the tournament, adding international experience to his rapid club progression.
Now he stands on the brink of a move that would reshape both his career and Brentford’s back line. A 21-year-old full-back, already hardened by relegation, already tested on the World Cup stage, about to join a club that finished one step short of Europe.
If the medical goes to plan, Brentford will have paid big money for a defender they believe can push them that final step further.
