Cavan Sullivan’s rise has been rapid. The next step might be historic.

The 16-year-old Philadelphia Union prodigy is set to be named in Mauricio Pochettino’s 26-man squad for a four-game U.S. friendly slate running from Sept. 26 to Oct. 6, a bold call that underlines just how quickly his stock has soared.

This isn’t a token invite. Sullivan has dragged a previously drifting Union side back into relevance, driving them into a playoff position and transforming their post-World Cup form. Since the tournament ended, Philadelphia haven’t lost a league match, and Sullivan has been right in the middle of that surge.

Coaches at national level have long had him circled. He has been embedded in the U.S. Youth National Team pathway for years, first pulling on the shirt at U-15 level and never really stepping out of the picture.

Historic Opportunity

Now comes the jump that really matters.

If Sullivan gets on the field in any of those four friendlies, he will become the second-youngest player ever to appear for the U.S. senior team. Only Freddy Adu, who made his debut in January 2006, would sit ahead of him in the record books.

The teenager hasn’t exactly hidden how badly he wants this. Earlier this month, he openly admitted he was hungry for a U.S. opportunity.
