Chalobah Joins England's World Cup Squad as Late Replacement
Trevoh Chalobah’s summer has changed in an instant. The Chelsea defender has been drafted into England’s 2026 World Cup squad as a late replacement after a calf injury ruled out a former Chelsea Academy graduate on the eve of the tournament.
Under FIFA rules, managers can reshuffle their outfield options up to 24 hours before their opening game. England have used that window, moving quickly to plug a gap in defence with a player Gareth Southgate already knows well.
Chalobah, 26, arrives with only one senior cap, earned in a friendly against Senegal almost exactly a year ago. It is a modest international résumé, but his club pedigree and tactical versatility have clearly carried weight. He can operate in central defence or step into midfield, a profile that offers England flexibility as the games pile up.
He will link up with Chelsea teammate Reece James in a squad now fine-tuning preparations for their first Group L assignment: Croatia in Dallas on Wednesday. That opener at Dallas Stadium, kicking off at 9pm (UK), will set the tone for a section that also includes Ghana, whom England face in Boston on Tuesday 23 June, again at 9pm (UK).
The timing of the injury is cruel for the outgoing defender, who misses a World Cup just as it begins. For Chalobah, it is the opposite story. One phone call, a seat on the plane, and a World Cup stage waiting in Texas.
