Five Midfielders Chelsea Could Target to Replace Enzo Fernández in January

Chelsea missed the chance to strengthen their midfield following Enzo Fernández's departure on Deadline Day. The Argentine's move to Manchester City marked a record-equalling transfer and left the Blues scrambling for options as the summer window closed.

The exit of Fernández, who is Chelsea's vice-captain through the 2025–26 season, came late in the transfer period, giving little time to find a direct replacement. The squad looked stretched in central midfield, a weakness exposed during the 2–1 loss to Arsenal under Xabi Alonso’s management. Although Alonso must work with the current roster for now, January could see a significant midfield signing.

Winter transfers often come at a premium, yet Chelsea have previously not hesitated to invest heavily in January, as evidenced by Fernández’s own record fee. With that in mind, here are five midfielders who might fill the gap next month.

Frenkie De Jong

Frenkie de Jong, when healthy, ranks among the world’s top central midfielders. Chelsea pursuing the Dutchman might seem bold, but his situation at Barcelona makes it more feasible. Since the 2026 World Cup, De Jong has not played due to a partially torn MCL. He has so far avoided surgery, choosing conservative treatment with hopes of returning by October.

Barcelona’s midfield is loaded with talent, including Rodri, Pedri, Gavi, and Marc Bernal, which limits De Jong’s starting chances even when fit. Frustrated by his injury issues, Barcelona might consider selling him for cash. Chelsea showed interest in 2022, making a renewed pursuit a possible strategy if De Jong recovers as planned.

Manu Koné

Manu Koné was close to joining Chelsea last summer before AS Roma's coach Gian Piero Gasperini blocked the move. Chelsea reportedly offered around $70.2 million (£52 million) plus winger Jamie Gittens on loan for the French midfielder. Known for his strength in duels and ball control, Koné excels at winning possession and advancing the play.

Koné would pair well with Moisés Caicedo in a double-pivot midfield, potentially freeing up Chelsea's attack. Although unavailable in the summer, revisiting his availability in January might be worthwhile. Gasperini’s stance could change depending on Roma's ability to find replacements or their season progress.

Adam Wharton

Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace has drawn attention from major Premier League clubs and even Real Madrid. At 22, he’s known for progressive playmaking, technical skill, and an eagerness to push the ball forward rather than opting for safe passes.

Wharton’s style mirrors some qualities of Fernández and would complement Caicedo well. Given his young age and rising profile, he might be a hot commodity again this winter. Chelsea would face stiff competition, but pursuing Wharton could be rewarding regardless of the transfer fee.

Lamine Camara

Lamine Camara nearly joined Chelsea on Deadline Day after Monaco accepted a $63.7 million (£47.1 million) bid. However, Monaco reversed course last minute, hoping to keep Folarin Balogun, who also stayed put. This left both sides disappointed, with Chelsea missing out on a midfielder they had agreed personal terms with for a six-year contract.

Camara combines athleticism with solid defensive skills and reliable ball handling. He showed his quality soon after the failed transfer by performing strongly in Monaco’s win over Paris Saint-Germain. Despite strained relations between clubs, Chelsea might try again for the 22-year-old in January.

Alex Scott

Alex Scott was targeted by Chelsea before Fernández’s departure, with an $86 million (£64 million) offer made to Bournemouth. The deal didn’t materialize, but Scott remains high on Chelsea’s list for January. At 23, Scott embodies the modern midfielder: industrious in defense, adept at distribution, and dangerous going forward.

Bournemouth recently sold Antoine Semenyo for a large sum in January, indicating they might cash in on Scott too. Multiple clubs admire him, so acquiring Scott would require a significant investment, possibly reaching the $100 million mark. Still, Chelsea may find it worthwhile to pursue a player with such potential.
