Chelsea Reject Leeds United Loan Bid for Mykhailo Mudryk

Chelsea have turned down an opening season-long loan bid from Leeds United for winger Mykhailo Mudryk, but the story is far from over.

The offer, which contained no option to buy, fell well below Chelsea’s expectations on financial terms. Talks are ongoing, though, and the Ukraine international is understood to be open to a move to Elland Road as he looks to restart a stalled career.

Mudryk, now 25, has already agreed in principle to spend the season away from Stamford Bridge to regain sharpness and rhythm after a brutal lay-off. He spent 20 months out of the game following a positive test for the banned substance meldonium, with his suspension only ending in July.

Since then, he has been eased back into action on Chelsea’s pre-season tour under new head coach Xabi Alonso, making a handful of appearances from the bench as the club carefully manages his return.

Despite interest from abroad, Mudryk has made it clear in recent conversations that he wants to stay in the Premier League. That stance has shaped the market. Strasbourg – Chelsea’s sister club under the BlueCo umbrella – have explored a deal, as have sides in Italy, but England remains his priority.

That is where Leeds have sensed an opportunity. The Yorkshire club have pushed to the front of the queue by agreeing to take Mudryk on a straight loan with no purchase clause, a structure that suits Chelsea as they look to keep control of a player they still regard as an asset while shifting his salary for the season.

Leeds have already been busy this summer, adding attacker Harry Wilson from Fulham, centre-back Tarik Muharemovic from Sassuolo, goalkeeper James Trafford from Manchester City and defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach. Mudryk would be the most high-profile addition yet, a statement wide option to bolt onto that rebuild.

Their interest in Chelsea’s squad is not new. Striker Liam Delap was previously on their radar before that trail cooled, and attention moved firmly to the Ukrainian.

Brentford, long-term admirers of Mudryk, remain in the background. The Bees tried to sign him months before Chelsea beat them to his signature from Shakhtar Donetsk for an initial £61m in 2023, and they still like the player. This time, though, they wanted an option to make any loan permanent – a condition Chelsea have flatly rejected.

Coventry City have also registered interest, while a switch to Strasbourg is still being discussed as part of a wider conversation between Chelsea and the French club. Midfielder Dario Essugo is among the other names Chelsea are considering sending to Strasbourg as they look to place several squad players.

For now, all paths point away from Stamford Bridge. Chelsea do not completely rule out Mudryk staying, but that scenario is viewed inside the club as unlikely.

The next move belongs to Leeds. Do they come back with a stronger proposal for a winger desperate to prove himself again in English football, or does another suitor finally meet Chelsea’s demands first?
