Chelsea Sell Marc Guiu to RB Leipzig: Transfer Details
Chelsea have agreed to sell Marc Guiu to RB Leipzig in a permanent deal, cutting short the Spanish striker’s brief and curious spell at Stamford Bridge.
The agreement, thrashed out away from the spotlight, only surfaced on Friday evening when Fabrizio Romano delivered his trademark “here we go”, confirming that both clubs and the player had signed off on the move. Guiu will now travel to Germany to complete his medical and sign his contract before the transfer window shuts.
Chelsea have inserted a sell-on clause into the deal, protecting a slice of any future profit Leipzig might make on the 1.89m forward. The final fee remains undisclosed, but it follows the structure the London club had been pushing for in recent weeks.
From La Masia hope to Chelsea exit
Guiu arrived at Chelsea from Barcelona in July 2024 after the Premier League side activated his €6 million release clause. A product of La Masia, he had already made a splash in Spain, scoring on his first-team debut for Barça against Athletic Club in October 2023 and finding the net in the Champions League soon after.
Chelsea saw a penalty-box striker with presence and touch. In flashes, he justified that view.
He scored a first-half hat-trick against Shamrock Rovers in the 2024-25 UEFA Conference League, a ruthless display of movement and finishing. He then added another goal against Ajax in the Champions League, underlining his knack for big-stage moments.
Yet the Premier League door never truly opened. Competition for places and constant churn in Chelsea’s attacking options meant regular league minutes stayed out of reach.
A loan to Sunderland in August 2025 was meant to fix that. It did not last. Liam Delap’s injury forced Chelsea to trigger an early recall after only weeks, and while Guiu made several more appearances, he never nailed down a starting role.
By the start of the 2026-27 season, the writing was on the wall. Under new head coach Xabi Alonso, Guiu did not even receive a squad number as Chelsea reshaped their forward line and trimmed the squad.
Leipzig win the race after “secret talks”
The move to Leipzig closes a chase that had quietly drawn in some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Chelsea had previously set an asking price of around €25 million in talks with other suitors and insisted on a sell-on clause in any agreement. Napoli pushed hardest, even reaching reported personal terms with the striker, but the clubs stayed apart on valuation. Manchester City tracked the situation from a distance, while Sevilla explored the idea of taking Guiu back to Spain on loan.
Leipzig worked in the shadows instead. Romano described “secret talks and zero links” before revealing the deal was done on both club and player side. Once the German club aligned with Chelsea’s preferred structure, the path cleared.
A familiar project in the Bundesliga
For Leipzig, this is a move straight from their playbook. The Bundesliga side have built a reputation on signing young forwards, giving them serious minutes, and selling them on at a premium.
Guiu fits the mould. Tall, strong, and effective in the air, he offers a traditional focal point with the penalty-box instincts he showed at Barcelona and, in bursts, at Chelsea. In Germany, the expectation will be simple: turn flashes into a full season’s worth of output.
For Chelsea, the transfer brings in a financial return on a €6 million investment while keeping a stake in whatever comes next for the 20-year-old through the sell-on clause. For Guiu, it is a reset.
Once the medical is done and the paperwork signed, the move will become official. Then the question shifts from why it ended so quickly at Stamford Bridge to how far he can go in Leipzig’s red and white.
