Lionel Scaloni Names Cristian Romero as Argentina's Next Captain After Messi
After more than twenty years wearing Argentina’s iconic jersey, Lionel Messi is stepping away from international play. His time with La Albiceleste was marked not only by dazzling skill but also by his ability to inspire teammates and command respect on the field.
Messi captained Argentina for 15 years, a role that came with intangible qualities difficult to replace. Now, questions arise about who will fill the leadership void left behind.
Cristian Romero Named as Messi’s Successor
Lionel Scaloni, Argentina’s head coach, did not hesitate to name the next captain. According to Italian journalist Gianluca DiMarzio, Cristian Romero, the central defender for Atletico Madrid, will take the armband once Messi retires.
At 28, Romero brings experience and leadership. He started in six of seven matches during Argentina’s victorious 2022 World Cup campaign and has earned 60 caps. Despite some struggles at Tottenham in his final season there, he remains one of Europe's top defenders.
Romero has been recognized in the Copa America Best XI twice, in 2021 and 2024, showing consistent form when representing Argentina internationally. While it will take time to see if he can match the leadership standards set by legends like Messi and Maradona, Romero seems ready for the challenge.
Leadership Group Details
Romero demonstrated his leadership recently when he captained Argentina against Bolivia on September 30, scoring a memorable header in front of fans in his hometown of Cordoba.
"A day that will always be etched in my memory," Romero told Goal. "I never imagined starting my career at Belgrano and 10 years later returning having achieved everything with the National Team. Scaloni told me quite some time ago that I was going to be the third captain. It's up to me to assume that responsibility."
Supporting Romero are veteran goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, serving as vice-captain, and striker Lautaro Martinez, acting as deputy captain.
