Crysencio Summerville Emerges as Top Target for Manchester United

Manchester United are closing in on a clear run at Crysencio Summerville, with Liverpool stepping away from the race and West Ham United braced for another painful departure after relegation.

The 24-year-old winger, one of the few bright sparks in a grim season at the London Stadium, is high on United’s attacking shortlist as INEOS sharpen their summer plans. Seven goals and five assists in 34 appearances for a struggling side tell only part of the story; his stock truly rose on the biggest stage.

Summerville’s World Cup reminded Europe why he has long been rated as a winger built for elite level football. Deployed off the left for the Netherlands, he produced two goals and two assists in four matches before their shock exit to Morocco in the last 32. When West Ham faded, he didn’t. That matters to recruitment teams who look beyond league tables.

Now, with West Ham dropping into the Championship, he is “emerging as a top left-wing target” for Manchester United this summer, according to Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas. United’s priority remains the midfield, but the need for a new left-sided forward has been firmly logged at Old Trafford, and Summerville has moved into a leading position on their board.

He is not the only name there. United admire Morgan Rogers at Aston Villa, Iliman Ndiaye at Everton and Lille’s Matias Fernandez-Pardo. Yet the market is brutal. Villa and Everton want to keep their men and would demand huge money, with Rogers valued at over £80 million and potentially closer to £100m. Fernandez-Pardo brings promise but no Premier League experience.

Summerville ticks that box. He also comes at a price that, while steep, is at least grounded in reality. West Ham want around £50m to sell, a significant fee but one that sits well below the eye-watering figures attached to Rogers.

Liverpool had done their homework earlier in the year, with The Athletic reporting that the Anfield club explored a move before recently cooling their interest. That decision has shifted the landscape. With Jürgen Klopp’s side stepping back, United now stand as frontrunners, with Arsenal monitoring the situation rather than driving it.

The picture at Old Trafford is not entirely straightforward. Any move for Summerville could hinge on what happens with Marcus Rashford.

Rashford is due back at Carrington after the World Cup, Barcelona’s £26m option to buy having expired. The forward would like to return to Barca, but he is open to being reintegrated into the United squad under Michael Carrick if the new regime sees a central role for him. Should Carrick decide to restore Rashford as a key figure on the left, the urgency for Summerville may fade.

If Rashford’s future remains uncertain or he is moved on, the path clears. A 24-year-old, proven in the Premier League and on the international stage, at a club that needs to sell after relegation – that is exactly the type of opportunity INEOS have been tasked with exploiting.

On Friday, Old Trafford reporter Laurie Whitwell underlined that Summerville and Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall are both on INEOS’ list of serious targets as they reshape United’s squad profile and wage bill. The intent is clear: younger, hungry, resale value intact.

Around it all, the usual transfer theatre swirls. Paul Scholes has urged his former club to hijack a separate £100m deal in what would be a blockbuster twist to the window, a reminder that United still carry the expectation of big, statement moves as well as smart ones.

Summerville would fall somewhere in between. Not a galáctico, not a gamble. A winger entering his peak, carrying the scars of relegation but also the confidence of a World Cup campaign that proved he can live with the pressure.

West Ham know they are likely to lose him. United know this is a chance to move quickly, with Liverpool out of the way and Arsenal still on the fringes.

The decision now rests in Manchester: build the left flank around a revived Rashford, or roll the dice on a new era with Crysencio Summerville cutting in at Old Trafford?
