The Italian side finally found a way back when Albert Gudmundsson converted from the spot, trimming the deficit on the night and nudging the aggregate scoreline back towards respectability. The goal injected some noise, some belief, into the stands. For the first time, Palace had to feel the temperature rise.

After the interval, the momentum turned. Cher Ndour swept in eight minutes into the second half to give Fiorentina the lead on the evening. One more, and the tie would at least start to flicker. The hosts pushed, the purple shirts poured forward, and the rhythm of the game tilted towards the home side.

But the comeback never came.
