Crystal Palace Under WSL Investigation for Substitution Rule Violation with Possible Points Deduction

Crystal Palace finds itself embroiled in a disciplinary issue after their narrow win against Everton in the Women’s Super League (WSL). The team secured a 1-0 victory thanks to a first-half goal by Lexi Lloyd-Smith, but the match result is now at risk due to an alleged breach of substitution rules.

Controversy Around Excessive Substitution Windows

The drama unfolded during Palace’s season opener, where they reportedly used four separate substitution windows, exceeding the WSL regulation. While teams can make up to five substitutions, these must be completed within a maximum of three stoppages during play, excluding halftime. The issue isn’t the number of players changed but the timing and frequency of these substitutions.

"We can confirm there was a breach of competition rules in the Crystal Palace versus Everton match. Crystal Palace used a fourth substitution opportunity during a fourth stoppage in play, when the rules permit a maximum of three substitution opportunities per match. We will now conduct an investigation alongside both clubs and Pro Ref and update in due course," stated the WSL.

The final substitution took place in the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time when manager Jo Potter brought Kirsty Howat on for Shannon O’Brien. Earlier in the game, Abbie Larkin, Ashleigh Weerden, and Allyson Swaby were introduced during three different substitution breaks.

Possible Outcomes and Tribunal Involvement

The WSL does not have a set automatic penalty for this violation, but an independent tribunal may be called to decide the consequences. Potential sanctions range from warnings and fines to more serious punishments such as points deductions or ordering a replay of the fixture. A replay would erase Palace’s 1-0 win and require both sides to meet again at a later date.

Officiating Team Held Accountable

The refereeing crew, led by Megan Wilson, failed to stop the illegal substitution, breaching their duty to enforce the rules during the match. As a result, the entire officiating team has been suspended from upcoming WSL fixtures while the incident undergoes review.
