Diego Moreira: Carrying Kaká's Legacy in the Derby della Madonnina

Diego Moreira didn’t just pick a number. He picked a legacy.

On the night of his first Derby della Madonnina, the 22-year-old Belgian winger steps into San Siro wearing the No 22 shirt that still belongs, in the minds of many Milanisti, to one man: Kaká.

Speaking to DAZN’s “Remember the Name” series ahead of Milan’s clash with Inter, Moreira admitted he originally had his eye on something else.

“I wanted the No 7 when I arrived. When I found out it was available I could have changed, but I'm happy with 22,” he said. “It's an honour, and now it's up to me to show I can follow in his footsteps, because he left a legacy here.”

That legacy is written into derby folklore. Kaká’s first Milan goal came in this fixture, a 3-1 win over Inter in October 2003 that helped launch a love affair between a Brazilian playmaker and a demanding stadium. Every time the 22 lights up on the fourth official’s board now, that memory flickers too.

Moreira knows it. He has studied it. And he’s using it.

A €50m bet for the big stage

Milan moved decisively for Moreira in August, bringing him in from Strasbourg for a reported €50m plus add-ons and tying him down to a five-year contract. That fee alone tells you what the club think he can become.

The start, though, has not been straightforward. Hamstring fatigue sidelined him for the last two league games — the 2-0 win away to Udinese and the wild 4-2 home defeat to Bologna on Wednesday. Just as he was beginning to find rhythm, his body called a brief halt.

Rúben Amorim has now confirmed he is fit for the derby. For a player of his profile, there could hardly be a bigger stage to step back onto.

Moreira understands the weight of the occasion, and of the shirt on his back.

“I know he scored his first goal against Inter,” he said of Kaká’s derby breakthrough. “It's one of the biggest games in Europe, so we're fired up. If I get to play in this game, I'll die for my team. I can't wait.”

No hedging, no caution. Just a young winger promising to run himself into the ground if given a minute on the pitch.

Milan chasing, Inter and Lazio setting the pace

The context only sharpens the edge of his words. Milan enter the derby in fifth place on 18 points, already seven adrift of Inter and Lazio at the top. The margin is not fatal in October, but it is uncomfortable. Lose tonight and that gap begins to feel like a pattern rather than a blip.

San Siro has seen this script before: a new No 22, a derby, a chance to write the first line of a story that could last years. Kaká seized it in 2003 and never looked back.

Now it’s Moreira’s turn to walk out under the same lights, with the same number between his shoulders, and a title race already tugging at Milan’s sleeve.

The shirt is heavy. The moment is heavier. Is he ready to carry both? Tonight, in the heat of the derby, he gets his first real chance to answer.
