Dominik Szoboszlai leant back in his chair, smiled and tried to rank the days that have shaped his life. Signing for Liverpool. The birth of his child. And now this.
The Hungary captain has committed his peak years to Anfield, signing a new five-year contract that ties him to the club until the age of 30 – and he has made it clear what he wants in return: everything, including the Champions League.
Peak years locked in
Szoboszlai had entered the final two years of his previous deal, a situation that can quickly turn awkward at a club with Liverpool’s ambitions. It never felt like that. "It's maybe my biggest day," he told the club’s website. "There are a couple in front of it – probably when I signed for Liverpool the first one and when I got my baby, of course. But in my football career, I can say this is in the top three. Very happy. [I] can't wait to go again and again and again. I'm just happy to be here."
This is not a sentimental extension. It is a reward for a season that underlined why Liverpool paid £60m to prise him from RB Leipzig in 2023 and why they see him as a pillar of the next era.
A season that demanded a new deal
Last season Szoboszlai was everywhere. Thirteen goals, 12 assists, and a willingness to occupy whatever role the team needed. He drove from midfield, drifted wide, pressed high, created, finished. Managers treasure that kind of versatility; boards tend to pay for it.
His influence did not dip when the stakes rose. As Liverpool powered to the Premier League title in 2024-25, Szoboszlai’s presence became a constant thread in their play, his intensity without the ball matching his composure with it.

"There's always more to come. I'm never happy," he said. "I'm happy with myself but I think I can do even better. I think that's why I'm sitting here, because that pushed me since I was a kid: that it was never enough. And I'm thinking the same now."

Setting the standard
Szoboszlai is not just signing on as a key player; he is positioning himself as a standard-bearer.
"I want to set the example. I want to be an example also for everyone, as much as I can," he said. "When I signed, I said I want to win everything. That didn't change for a little moment either. It stayed the same: I want to win everything that is possible in this country, also let's say the Champions League. I'm ready to go for it."
That Champions League reference is not a throwaway. Liverpool have climbed back to the summit of English football; Europe is the next mountain in his mind. The new deal keeps him at Anfield for the heart of his prime, the years when elite midfielders usually define their legacy.
Liverpool have now matched that personal ambition with contractual commitment. The question that lingers over this signing is no longer whether Dominik Szoboszlai is in it for the long haul.
It is whether this will be the era in which he helps drag Liverpool back to the top of Europe.
