Trump seemingly anticipated a warm welcome, but instead faced jeers throughout the match. The first instance came during the United States National Anthem. Fans maintained respect for the anthem itself, yet when Trump's image appeared on the video board near the performance’s end, the audience responded with boos.
Later, as Trump crossed the field post-match to join the stage for the ceremony, the booing resumed, captured in numerous fan videos. The atmosphere was far from friendly, coming from supporters of both Spain and Argentina.
Uncomfortable Trophy Presentation
It was announced last month that Trump would present the World Cup trophy to the champions. This followed an awkward episode the previous year when he interrupted Chelsea’s Club World Cup celebration, lingering during their trophy lift.
Sunday's ceremony repeated that discomfort. After handing the trophy to Spain and congratulating some players, Trump did not step away. Instead, he lingered on the podium, smiling but clearly overstaying his welcome.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino was seen trying to guide Trump off stage, but the president remained, creating a strange scene. An Australian broadcaster even remarked that broadcasters might edit Trump out of the footage due to his intrusive presence.
Recent Harsh Words About Spain
The smiles during the trophy handover clashed with comments Trump made less than two weeks before. On July 8, during a news conference with Dutch Prime Minister Rutte, Trump harshly criticized Spain’s role in NATO and trade relations.
"Spain is a wasted cause. We don’t want to do any trade business with Spain anymore, by the way. I’d like to cut it off," Trump said. "Spain is a terrible partner in NATO. They don’t participate, they don’t pay. I don’t want anything to do with Spain. Cut off all trade with Spain, please. Including visits. We don’t want anything to do."
He added, "We don’t have to trade with them. I don’t want to do any more trade with them. Make it immediately. Don’t even talk to them. They’re hopeless. Bad people." Although his frustration targeted Spanish leadership, the contrast was stark as he handed the trophy to Spain’s victorious team.
