Eduardo Camavinga Declines Manchester United Move
Eduardo Camavinga has made his call. Manchester United can stop asking.
A reshuffle in Real Madrid’s midfield plans has closed the door on a move to Old Trafford, with the Frenchman now fully committed to fighting for his place at the Bernabeu, according to Fabrizio Romano.
United’s search meets a hard stop
United’s rebuild in the middle of the pitch is not finished. After bringing in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, the plan is clear: add a more defensive-minded presence to anchor the new-look midfield.
Camavinga was high on that list. At 23, with Champions League experience and elite pedigree, he fit the profile perfectly.
Last season, though, was brutal for him. A poor campaign cost him his place in France’s World Cup squad and raised questions about his trajectory. Inside the game, the verdict has been softer: one bad year, not a career in decline.
United sensed opportunity. As Romano revealed, they picked up the phone in July.
“Man Utd called the agents of Camavinga in July. United wanted to be informed,” he said on his YouTube channel.
The answer they received never changed.
Rodri twist locks the door
Real Madrid’s summer business in midfield looked like it might squeeze Camavinga towards the exit. Bernardo Silva has already arrived, and the club pushed hard to add 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri from Manchester City.
A move for Rodri was approved internally. The green light was there. But Real hesitated when it came to making an official bid, and that hesitation proved fatal.
Barcelona stormed through the gap. Personal terms with Rodri are agreed, and a deal between the clubs is understood to be close, with a total package expected to reach around €70m. With Rodri now giving full priority to Barça, Real Madrid have walked away from the chase.
That decision changes everything for Camavinga.
Rodri occupies the same zone of the pitch, the same role, the same territory Camavinga wants to own. With the Spaniard no longer on his way to the Bernabeu, the Frenchman’s path suddenly looks clearer.
Romano summed it up: Camavinga is now “even more motivated to stay and continue trying to convince Jose Mourinho.”
Camavinga’s stance: Madrid or nothing
Romano’s latest update leaves little room for interpretation. United’s interest is described as “confirmed and concrete,” yet the player’s message has been consistent.
“The answer Camavinga is giving to all the clubs, United and those interested before United has always been the same – Camavinga wants to stay at Real Madrid,” Romano explained.
“He wants to continue at Real Madrid and is not changing his mind. And so as of today there are no changes and he insists on staying at Real Madrid.”
The Rodri collapse hasn’t opened a door for United. It has slammed it shut. The Frenchman sees opportunity, not threat, in Madrid’s failed pursuit of another holding midfielder.
United move on – but to whom?
With Camavinga off the table, United’s recruitment team must look elsewhere for their defensive pivot.
Names are already in circulation. Manu Kone, Sander Berge, Carlos Baleba and Tyler Adams have all been linked as options to fill the holding role and complete the midfield overhaul.
There is also a more left-field possibility. Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly, capable of operating both at left-back and at the base of midfield, has been offered to United, with the Gunners understood to be open to a sale.
United still want one more midfielder. Real Madrid have made their choice. So has Camavinga.
The question now is whether United can find the right alternative to anchor their season, or whether this missed opportunity in Madrid will linger long after the window closes.
