England Faces Late Squad Changes for Nations League Matches

England’s preparations for their upcoming Nations League fixtures have been jolted by a flurry of withdrawals – and a late reshuffle from Thomas Tuchel.

Cole Palmer, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford, Declan Rice and Tino Livramento have all pulled out of the squad, forcing the England manager into a rethink just days before the players report for duty.

In their place come two men who know what it feels like to sit on the fringes and wait: Everton’s James Garner and Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White. Both will link up with the squad on Tuesday, stepping into a camp suddenly stripped of some of its most influential names.

Tuchel had already hinted this might happen. On Friday he admitted that 26-year-old Gibbs-White, who has six caps, was close to making the original list. Now the door has swung fully open.

The twist is particularly sharp for Palmer. Recalled by Tuchel after his controversial omission from England’s World Cup squad, the Chelsea forward looked set for a central role in this international window. Instead, a minor injury has forced him out before a ball is kicked.

The knocks have piled up quickly. Mainoo and Rashford were both taken off late in Manchester United’s 1-1 draw at Fulham on Sunday and assessed by club staff before their withdrawals were confirmed. Rice, who played the full 90 minutes in Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat by Brighton, has also been ruled out, depriving Tuchel of his midfield anchor.

At the back, Livramento’s stop-start season continues. Limited to just three substitute appearances for Newcastle, the defender will miss the chance to build rhythm on the international stage.

The call-ups for Garner and Gibbs-White carry their own story. Neither was selected for the 2026 World Cup, yet both have forced their way back into the conversation. Garner, 23, made his first two senior England appearances in March and now returns with momentum from an increasingly assured role at Everton. Gibbs-White arrives as Forest’s captain and creative heartbeat, finally getting the nod that narrowly eluded him in the initial squad.

Tuchel’s plans have been dented, no question. But with two hungry midfielders stepping into a disrupted camp, this Nations League window may end up revealing something more important than a settled XI: who is ready to seize an unexpected chance when England need it most.
