James Garner Recalled to England Squad for UEFA Nations League
James Garner has been handed a route back into the England set-up, recalled by Thomas Tuchel for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures after a blistering start to the season with Everton.
The 25-year-old midfielder, who won his first cap in a friendly against Uruguay and added a second against Japan in March, returns at a time of enforced change. Declan Rice, Kobbie Mainoo and Cole Palmer have all withdrawn through injury, ripping out a large chunk of England’s recent core and opening the door for form players to step in.
Garner is one of them. He has been central to Everton’s unbeaten opening in the Premier League, starting four of their first five matches and setting the tone in Sean Dyche’s midfield. Within the squad, he sits joint-second for tackles per game and fourth for interceptions, a snapshot of the edge he brings out of possession. Alongside him, another familiar name is back in the frame. Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White has also been recalled after an eye-catching start to the campaign. The 26-year-old has produced one goal and two assists in five Premier League outings, but the raw output only tells part of the story.
No player in the division has created more big chances so far, and only two have averaged more key passes per game. Gibbs-White is not just busy; he is decisive in the final third, repeatedly prising open defences and dictating attacks for Forest.
His return carries a hint of unfinished business. Despite strong form last season, Gibbs-White was left out of the 2026 World Cup squad, a decision that stung given his trajectory. Now he has a fresh opportunity to convince Tuchel that he belongs in England’s long-term plans, not just as a squad option but as a genuine contender for regular call-ups.
