Enzo Fernández’s Chelsea future has been thrown into sharp focus after Xabi Alonso left the midfielder out of the squad for the EFL Cup tie against Luton, with Manchester City circling ahead of the transfer deadline.
The Argentine, who has already made it clear he would like to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, was a surprise omission from the matchday group. His name was nowhere on the teamsheet, not even among the substitutes, just as talk of City interest began to grow louder in England.
Reports from Spanish outlet Marca underlined the tension around the situation, highlighting that Fernández’s absence came at a time when his future is again under scrutiny. In England, the message is similar: City are weighing up a move before the window slams shut.
Alonso, though, pushed back hard on any suggestion of a disciplinary issue or a transfer-driven snub. For him, this was football, not politics.
“It was simply about today’s match,” he said after Chelsea’s win over Luton. The coach pointed to rotation, freshness and the specific demands of the tie as the reasons behind his call. “We have other players who need minutes to play.”
He doubled down when asked when he had decided to leave Fernández out. “Wednesday evening. It’s a decision I made,” he replied, making it clear this was his judgment, not a directive from above.
Alonso went out of his way to defend the 23-year-old’s attitude. He described the World Cup winner as “extremely professional,” stressing that Fernández trains well and has given him no problems behind the scenes. That line matters. It frames the omission as a tactical choice rather than a rupture in the relationship.
Even so, the timing is impossible to ignore. A key midfielder, previously vocal about wanting a move, left out of a cup squad just as Manchester City consider a bid. It all adds a sharper edge to what might otherwise be brushed off as routine rotation.
Alonso did leave room for a quick reset. Asked if Fernández could come back into the fold for Sunday’s league game against Brighton at Stamford Bridge, he kept the door open. “Enzo is a good professional. He trains well, and I have nothing to say about that,” he said. “Simply, these are decisions we have to make with the match we played tonight in mind. We’ll see on Sunday.”
For now, Chelsea insist this is about minutes and management. But with City lurking and the window ticking down, every team selection, every omission, every word from the manager feels like part of a bigger story that may yet explode before deadline day.
