Enzo Fernández's Future at Chelsea: Uncertainty Amid Manchester City Interest
Xabi Alonso has refused to offer any assurances that Chelsea will resist if Manchester City come hard for Enzo Fernández – and the uncertainty is starting to define their summer.
No guarantees on Enzo
Fernández’s future hangs over Stamford Bridge. Chelsea’s unofficial deadline for clubs to lodge written offers of £120m for the 25-year-old Argentina midfielder has already passed, but the prospect of a departure has not.
City, reshaping their midfield after Rodri’s move to Barcelona, have put Fernández high on their list and are weighing up a move before the window closes. They are also tracking Roma’s Manu Koné, yet it is the Chelsea playmaker who sits at the heart of their plans.
Chelsea know the situation can turn quickly. Fernández has made no secret of his desire to leave, and when Alonso was asked directly whether the World Cup winner would still be his player at the end of the window, the answer was deliberately narrow.
“Enzo is a Chelsea player,” the former Real Madrid manager said. “He’s a top player. He’s training really well since he started 10 days ago with the team. Very integrated, and we are happy with him. He’s getting ready for Monday.”
No promise. No line in the sand. Just the present tense.
City circling, Chelsea planning
Chelsea open their Premier League campaign away to Fulham on Monday night. Fernández is expected to be in the squad, yet even on the eve of the season Alonso sidestepped another question: has the £106.7m midfielder told him he wants to stay?
“He’s training really well. I see him with a good attitude. That’s what we want. Everyone is trying their best to prepare for the kick off of the Premier League.”
Behind that careful language, Chelsea are braced for movement. If Fernández goes, they want a replacement – and quickly.
They are strong admirers of Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and have already seen one offer for the 22-year-old rejected. Bournemouth have made it clear they intend to resist a sale this summer. Adam Wharton is another option, though he is hardly an easy target either: City have already had a bid for the England midfielder turned down by Crystal Palace.
The pressure is building on multiple fronts. City considering a huge bid. Selling clubs digging in. Chelsea trying to keep their options alive without knowing whether they will suddenly be £120m richer and a key midfielder lighter.
Trimming the squad, juggling interest
While the Enzo saga dominates the headlines, Alonso is also trying to streamline a bloated squad before deadline day.
Up front, Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap and Marc Guiu have slipped down the pecking order and are expected to move on if suitable deals emerge. Delap has no shortage of suitors: Everton, Leeds, Ipswich and Nottingham Forest are all tracking the striker.
There is activity at the back as well. Chelsea have interest in Pedro Neto and Malo Gusto, while Palace are looking to strengthen their defence by taking Axel Disasi on loan.
So Chelsea head to Craven Cottage with a squad that could look very different in a fortnight. Enzo Fernández will be there on Monday, Alonso insists. Whether he is still there when the window shuts is the question that could shape Chelsea’s entire season.
