Erling Haaland's Brace Sends Senegal to the Brink

Senegal’s World Cup campaign now hangs on the thinnest of threads. On a night when they needed control and clarity, they ran into Erling Haaland at full tilt and paid the price.

The Norway striker struck twice in a gripping 3-2 win, dragging his side over the line and leaving the Lions of Teranga staring at the exit door. Ismaïla Sarr did everything he could to drag Senegal with him, matching Haaland with a brace of his own, but it wasn’t enough to stop the slide.

Senegal can now do no better than third in Group I. Even that comes with an asterisk: they need help from elsewhere, a cocktail of results to fall kindly if they are to sneak through. For a team that arrived with genuine ambition, that is a brutal comedown.

The contest itself crackled. Sarr, direct and relentless, kept hauling Senegal forward, refusing to let the game drift away. Each time Norway looked ready to close the door, he kicked it back open. Yet Haaland kept answering, his two goals underlining the difference between a team clinging on and one with a ruthless finisher at its heart.

When the final whistle went, Senegal were left with more questions than hope. Defensive lapses, missed moments in transition, and the inability to shut down Haaland at key points have pushed them to the brink.

Africa did at least find a measure of relief elsewhere.

In another tight, nervy tie, Algeria found a way to respond after their setback against Lionel Messi’s Argentina. Amine Gouiri stepped up late, delivering a decisive goal in a 2-1 win over Jordan that felt as much about character as it did about points. Algeria had been stung by Argentina; this time, they stayed in the fight and were rewarded in the closing stages.

That victory gives Algeria a lifeline and restores some pride for the continent on a day when Senegal’s hopes dimmed.

Looking Ahead

Attention now turns to Tuesday, and it will not be a quiet one. Ghana’s meeting with England carries its own intrigue, not least around how Ghana handle the Jordan Ayew question and reshape the attack around him. Every selection call will be magnified, every tactical tweak scrutinised against one of the tournament’s heavyweights.

At the same time, DR Congo’s clash with Colombia promises its own edge, with both sides eyeing a statement performance in a group that still feels open.

Senegal have done all they can for now, even if it wasn’t enough. The rest of Africa marches on, chasing points, moments and momentum that could yet redefine this World Cup.
