Fermin Lopez Injury Threatens World Cup Participation

Spain’s plans for the World Cup have taken a major hit. Fermin Lopez, one of Barcelona’s breakout stars of the past two seasons, is expected to miss the tournament after fracturing a bone in his right foot.

The 23-year-old suffered the injury to his fifth metatarsal during Barça’s 3-1 win over Real Betis on Sunday, a routine league victory that has suddenly taken on a far darker tone for both club and country.

Barcelona confirmed the diagnosis and announced that Lopez will undergo surgery. They stopped short of putting a date on his return, but the type of injury tells its own story. Fifth metatarsal fractures typically sideline footballers for two to three months, and for a player whose game depends on sharp changes of direction and explosive movement, recovery can be anything but straightforward.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente names his World Cup squad on Monday, 25 May. Unless there is an unexpected medical miracle, Lopez will not be on that list.

From key man at Barça to major absence for Spain

Lopez has grown from promising youngster to central figure at Barcelona over the last two campaigns, helping the Catalan side secure back-to-back La Liga titles. This season he has been one of their most productive midfielders: 13 goals and 17 assists in 48 appearances in all competitions, numbers that underline just how much he has added to Barça’s attacking edge.

He has done it the hard way too. Twice this season he has had to manage groin problems, yet he still played through those setbacks to become a regular in the starting XI.

That form translated naturally into the national team picture. Lopez has already collected seven caps for Spain and, on current trajectory, looked a near-certainty to travel to the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The tournament was shaping up to be the next step in his rapid rise, his second major finals after a brief but symbolic role in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, where he featured for 28 minutes. Now, that progression has been brutally interrupted.

World Cup dreams on hold

Spain open their World Cup campaign against Cape Verde on Monday, 15 June in Atlanta (17:00 BST), before taking on Uruguay and Saudi Arabia in Group H. De la Fuente must now reshape a midfield plan that almost certainly had Lopez pencilled in, if not as a guaranteed starter then as a high-impact option with goals and creativity from deep.

The nature of the injury offers a cautionary tale. Manchester United and Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez fractured the same bone in April 2023, required surgery, and missed the rest of that season. He returned at the start of the following campaign, only to aggravate the injury in September. Clubs and national teams know how delicate this particular recovery can be.

For Barcelona, the blow is immediate. For Spain, it is strategic. A young midfielder at the heart of both projects now faces months of rehabilitation instead of a World Cup on American soil.

Lopez will have to watch from afar as Spain chase another title and Barcelona push on without him. For a player who has accelerated through every stage of his career so far, the hardest task now is the one he cannot rush: waiting for a broken foot to heal while the biggest tournament in football goes on without him.
