Fernandes vs Haaland: Captaincy Decision for Gameweek 2

Gameweek 2 throws Fantasy Premier League managers straight into a familiar dilemma: stick with Erling Haaland (£15.5m) or back Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) to outscore him.

On form at home, no one did it better than Fernandes last season. On the road, no one matched Haaland. Now both step into their favourite arenas again.

This time, the numbers lean heavily towards Old Trafford.

The Home King vs the Away Machine

Fernandes welcomes promoted Ipswich Town to Manchester United’s home fortress on Sunday. Last season, no player in the game delivered more points in home matches.

He hit eight double-figure hauls at Old Trafford in 2025/26. Eight. That’s double Haaland’s four away hauls over the same campaign.

The reliability gap is just as stark. Fernandes blanked in only three of his 17 home outings. Haaland failed to return in seven of his 18 away appearances.

Haaland still opens the Gameweek, travelling to Crystal Palace on Friday night, and his ownership remains a tidal wave. In Gameweek 1, 4.38 million managers handed him the armband, compared with 1.48 million for Fernandes.

Both returned just two points. Both blanked. Both irritated huge chunks of the game – Haaland owned by 67.9 per cent, Fernandes by 48.5 per cent.

That’s where the opportunity lies.

If Fernandes hits his usual Old Trafford levels against a newly promoted side, the upside over a heavily captained Haaland could be enormous.

The Chasing Pack: Odegaard, Palmer, Joao Pedro

While the two premium giants stalled in Gameweek 1, a different trio exploded out of the blocks.

Martin Odegaard (£6.6m), Cole Palmer (£9.5m) and Joao Pedro (£7.6m) all delivered double-figure hauls to remind managers there are captaincy routes beyond the obvious.

Odegaard operated in a very advanced central role behind Kai Havertz (£7.0m) in Arsenal’s opener, scored, and walked away with 11 points against Coventry City. He now heads to Aston Villa, a side just thrashed 4-0 by Brighton & Hove Albion.

Palmer and Joao Pedro, meanwhile, wasted no time stamping their authority on Chelsea’s attack. Both produced a goal and an assist away to Fulham in their first match of 2026/27, underlining their status as focal points rather than passengers.

This week, they return to Stamford Bridge to face Brighton. Like Fernandes, they have the crowd and the comfort of home behind them.

For those hunting a differential captain, all three have the form and the roles to justify the risk. But they still sit a tier below the main argument.

So, Who Gets the Armband?

Strip away the fear of going against Haaland, and the case is clear.

Fernandes’ home record is simply too strong to ignore. Eight double-digit returns at Old Trafford last season, only three blanks, a promoted opponent visiting. All signs point in his direction.

Haaland will still be the default choice for most. He usually is. But the data says this is the week to back Fernandes to beat him.

Behind them, Odegaard and Palmer stand out as the next-best options, with Odegaard’s fixture at a wounded Villa just nudging him ahead for third place in the captaincy pecking order.

The season is only just beginning, but Gameweek 2 already asks a bold question: follow the crowd with Haaland, or trust the numbers and let Fernandes lead your team out?
