Fiorentina Rejects Jadon Sancho Despite Free-Agent Status

Jadon Sancho’s long flirtation with Serie A has hit another dead end.

Twelve months ago, the winger was at the heart of a tug-of-war involving Roma, a move that promised a reset and a fresh stage. It never materialised. Sancho instead landed at Aston Villa on loan, while Manchester United quietly chose not to extend his contract beyond this summer.

Now he is a free agent. Even that status, once a powerful bargaining chip, has not been enough to tempt Fiorentina.

According to Alfredo Pedullà, Sancho’s entourage contacted La Viola two weeks ago to gauge their interest in signing him on a free. No transfer fee, a player once valued among Europe’s brightest wide talents, and a club in the middle of a reshaping project. On paper, it looked like a conversation worth having.

Fiorentina didn’t bite.

The club swiftly rejected the idea, unconvinced by Sancho’s recent body of work and wary of the baggage that has followed him through his turbulent spell at Manchester United. The decision was not driven by finances, but by football and strategy.

They had another plan.

Fiorentina moved instead for Franco Mastantuono, opting for youth and a cleaner recent profile over the more famous name. It was a statement about where the club is going under Fabio Paratici, who is steering a significant rebuild in Florence.

Paratici knows Sancho well from his time in England. He has seen the winger at close quarters, seen the flashes of brilliance and the long spells of frustration. That familiarity did not translate into a second chance in Serie A. Faced with a choice between a reclamation project and a rising talent, he went with the latter.

For Fiorentina, it fits the pattern: a squad being reshaped with an eye on age, upside and stability rather than marquee gambles.

For Sancho, it is another door closed in Italy, and another reminder that reputation alone no longer carries him. The question now is simple and stark: where does he go next to prove he is still worth the risk?
