Folarin Balogun Reacts to World Cup Red Card Controversy
Folarin Balogun, a key player for the United States men's national team, was not shocked by the debate over his sudden eligibility in the round of 16 during the World Cup. Despite having no role in the decision-making process, he acknowledged the controversy surrounding the red card situation.
Balogun had initially received a red card in the round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, which usually meant he would miss the next game. Surprisingly, FIFA reversed the suspension just before the USMNT faced Belgium, allowing him to play. This unexpected ruling stirred considerable discussion, especially after former President Donald Trump revealed he urged FIFA President Gianni Infantino to overturn the ban.
"When that decision's overturned, of course it's going to be controversial," Balogun told reporters. "So for me, it's something that it didn't really surprise me too much. But as a player, my job is just to go out there and focus on my job."
FIFA's regulations state that a player must sit out the following match after receiving a red card, regardless of the tournament stage. Balogun accepted the original suspension, expecting to miss the crucial round of 16. However, he only learned about the reversal the day before the Belgium game. He emphasized respecting the official procedures, despite knowing little about the behind-the-scenes details.
Belgium's football federation expressed dissatisfaction with FIFA's decision. Their coach, Rudi Garcia, sarcastically remarked that he thought the World Cup was held in July, not April, labeling the ruling an "April Fools" joke. Garcia stressed that their objection was about protecting the sport, not targeting the American team or its federation.
Despite the tension, no open hostility occurred between the teams. After Belgium's 4-1 win, Garcia and Balogun exchanged respectful words. Garcia praised Balogun, saying, "It’s not his fault. He’s not the one to blame, and I told him that." Balogun congratulated the Belgian coach, who encouraged the young striker to take pride in his performance.
Many questioned whether Trump's involvement cast a shadow over the USMNT. Most players and coach Mauricio Pochettino dismissed the notion that political influence affected the result against Belgium. Still, Pochettino expressed frustration over the distracting narrative, lamenting how politics clouded the team's focus.
"In a personal way I feel so disappointed with too many people because mixed things, because they can put politics (into it)," Pochettino said.
The incident dominated headlines but did little to shift the attention from the field, where Belgium showed clear dominance. Balogun's stance remained steady: he accepted the decisions handed down and concentrated on playing his part.
