Fulham Signs Charles for Record Fee

Fulham have made their boldest move of the summer, sealing the signing of 22-year-old midfielder Charles in a deal worth up to £30m and shattering the Northern Irish transfer record in the process.

The agreement, built around an initial £26m fee with a further £4m in performance-related add-ons, eclipses the £15m Newcastle United paid Norwich City for Jamal Lewis in 2020. Charles now stands as the most expensive footballer in Northern Ireland’s history – and the latest statement of intent from Craven Cottage.

A five-year contract ties the former Manchester City academy product to west London, where he arrives with a clear role: step into the space left by Sasa Lukic after his move to Ipswich Town and inject fresh energy into Fulham’s midfield.

This was not a move made by default. Charles had strong interest from Leeds United but chose Fulham after holding direct talks with the coaching staff and being convinced by the club’s long-term plan.

Once the paperwork was done, the excitement poured out of him.

“I’m buzzing to finally get it over the line,” he told the club’s official website, speaking with the air of a player who knows the size of the opportunity in front of him. He praised what he called a strong foundation “from the bottom to the top,” and highlighted the clarity of the vision laid out by the manager.

“It’s a great club, with a really good vision – the manager explained that to me. To be here is a massive privilege. I hope to really kickstart my Premier League career. At such a good club as well, it’s perfect for me, and hopefully perfect for the fans as well.”

For Fulham, this is a calculated leap. For Charles, it is the doorway to the Premier League stage he has been chasing.
