Gameweek 8: Key Decisions and Injury Concerns in FPL
The clock is already ticking. Gameweek 8 locks at 18:30 BST on Friday 23 October – 90 minutes before the opening kick-off – and managers are scrambling through one of the trickiest rounds of the season so far.
Injuries, possible postponements, big-name underperformers and a handful of emerging differentials have turned this into a week where one bold call could swing a mini-league.
Where the Goals – and Clean Sheets – Are Expected
The numbers from the Chief Scout models are clear on one thing: there should be goals from the usual suspects.
The projections for attacking returns put Bruno Fernandes at the top of the pile on 0.91 expected attacking returns, followed closely by Erling Haaland (0.81), Bryan Mbeumo (0.81), Cole Palmer (0.79) and Alexander Isak (0.78). The algorithms still like Bruno. FPL managers, less so.
Those same models also flag which teams are best placed for clean sheets and goals this week, feeding into predicted line-ups for all 20 Premier League sides. The data is there for anyone willing to lean into it; the challenge is having the nerve to follow through.
Scout Backing: Thiago, Muharemovic and the Big Club Double-Ups
Inside the Scout room, there is rare agreement. All four of the in-house Scout Squad back Igor Thiago (£7.8m) and Tarik Muharemovic (£5.0m) as standout picks for Gameweek 8. When everyone in the room lands on the same names, FPL managers tend to sit up.
The weekly Scout Picks – essentially a Free Hit team in everything but name – double up on Chelsea, Arsenal and Brentford, signalling real confidence in those attacks and defences. Liverpool’s Bradley Barcola (£8.0m) also earns a place on the differential list, one of three low-ownership options being pushed for managers looking to climb fast rather than play safe.
Saka, Szoboszlai, Semenyo: Injury Trouble at the Top
The big headache, though, sits in midfield.
Bukayo Saka (£9.6m) limped off early in Munich on Wednesday night and Mikel Arteta has admitted Arsenal “need a few more scans and opinions from the specialists”. That kind of language rarely brings good news. Saka now joins Dominik Szoboszlai (£6.8m) and Antoine Semenyo (£8.3m) on the injury list.
For many, that’s surgery to a template midfield. Szoboszlai and Saka are core parts of “The Great and the Good” XI, and Semenyo has been a popular mid-price weapon. Millions of managers now need at least one replacement, often two.
So the spotlight swings to the next wave of midfield options:
- Morgan Gibbs-White (£7.9m) – The talisman is back fit after missing Gameweek 7 and remains the heartbeat of his side’s attack.
- Bryan Mbeumo (£7.9m) – A monster across multiple shooting metrics, he’s again at the centre of the statistical argument.
- Cole Palmer (£9.8m) – High on the ‘Goals Imminent’ table, with a ceiling that screams haul rather than steady drip of points.
- Morgan Rogers (£8.0m) – Cheaper than his Chelsea teammate but currently delivering more points and better expected goal involvement (xGI).
- Marcus Tavernier (£6.2m) – Four goals already this season and about to walk into a strong run of fixtures.
- Johan Manzambi (£6.0m) – Four returns in three starts and also heading into a good schedule, though flagged as a doubt for Gameweek 8 after missing midweek.
Tom’s Q&A adds more fuel to the debate, with Kevin Schade (£6.2m) making both of his Wildcard drafts. Phil Foden (£6.8m), fresh from a Champions League hat-trick, also enters the conversation as a form pick with pedigree.
One name the advice steers away from: Bruno Fernandes (£11.8m). Despite the model’s love for him, he has blanked in six of seven matches and has even gone public with criticism of his manager. For an FPL asset at that price, that combination of poor output and off-field noise is a red flag.
Calvert-Lewin Doubt Throws Another Curveball
Just as managers start to get a handle on their midfield chaos, another issue pops up at centre-forward.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£6.1m) picked up a contact injury last week and is now a major doubt for Sunday. Daniel Farke did not sugar-coat the situation:
“He is struggling, since this moment, with a bruise on his foot. Problems with this, still a question mark behind his availability.
If the game was today, all three of them [Calvert-Lewin, Stach and Okafor] wouldn’t be available.”
That warning is stark. Anyone relying on Calvert-Lewin as a starter needs a solid first substitute ready to come on – or a late transfer lined up if more bad news lands before the deadline.
Weather, Anfield and a Fixture at Risk
As if injuries and selection dilemmas weren’t enough, the weather is now part of the Gameweek 8 script.
There are whispers that Liverpool v Brighton and Hove Albion could be postponed because of severe conditions. It remains only that – whispers – but it’s enough to make managers nervous about committing to players in what should be one of the weekend’s marquee fixtures.
The debate has centred on whether to start Pascal Gross (£6.2m) and Maxim De Cuyper (£5.3m), two of FPL’s highest-scoring assets so far, despite their trip to Anfield. On paper, it’s a tough away game; in practice, their form has made them almost fixture-proof.
If the match is called off, though, all that planning collapses. Those who have stacked their XI with Liverpool and Brighton assets could be left relying heavily on their benches. This is the kind of week where a strong squad, not just a strong XI, might decide rank.
The Armband Question
The captaincy call, as always, hangs over everything.
Haaland will attract heavy backing, but the Captain Sensible analysis and the Rate My Team (RMT) algorithm lay out the full landscape of options for those willing to go against the crowd. With projections highlighting multiple heavy-hitters and several mid-price options in form, there is scope for a bold differential captain if you’re chasing.
Inside the Minds of the Elite
If you’re searching for reassurance or inspiration, the expert team reveals offer a window into how the best in the game are handling this chaos.
A three-time top 500 finisher, FPL General, and Hall of Famer Dan Wright have already nailed their colours to the mast with their Gameweek 8 drafts. Their moves underline the same themes running through the week: flexibility in midfield, respect for the data on Thiago and Muharemovic, caution around injury doubts, and a willingness to lean on strong benches with postponements in play.
The deadline is set. The injuries are real. The weather might yet rip up the script.
In a Gameweek like this, are you protecting your rank – or trying to blow your league wide open?
