Vincent Kompany Collapses During Bayern Training: Health Concerns Rise
Vincent Kompany is in hospital after collapsing during a Bayern Munich training session on Friday, deepening concern over the Bayern head coach’s health just days after he insisted he was recovering from a virus.
The 38-year-old had been visibly struggling on the touchline during last weekend’s win over RB Leipzig, walking gingerly and clearly in discomfort as he guided Bayern to a crucial Bundesliga victory. The club later confirmed he had been battling a virus, though Kompany continued to work through the illness.
He then took his place in the dugout again on Wednesday for Bayern’s Champions League draw with Arsenal, afterwards maintaining that he was on the mend and ready to push on into a key phase of the season.
That optimism did not last long.
On Friday, ahead of Sunday’s league clash with Freiburg, Kompany was watching a reserve-team training session when he suddenly collapsed. Medical staff responded quickly, and he was taken to hospital for further checks.
Bayern moved to calm immediate fears with a statement confirming their manager is under observation.
“Vincent Kompany is currently undergoing a thorough examination in the hospital and will remain under medical care. For the time being, his coaching staff will manage all training and match-related operations,” the club announced.
With Bayern still fighting on multiple fronts, the sight of their coach being taken away for treatment cut sharply against the usual intensity of Säbener Straße. Training and preparation now continue under his assistants, but the emphasis at the club has shifted firmly to Kompany’s wellbeing.
Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, underlined that stance.
“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. At Bayern, we will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery,” Eberl said. “Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and he will be given as much time as he needs. Everyone at FC Bayern wishes Vinnie a quick recovery.”
Support quickly arrived from England as well. Manchester City, where Kompany captained the side through the formative years of their modern dominance, sent a public message of solidarity.
“Everyone at Manchester City is wishing a speedy recovery to our former captain and Club legend, Vincent Kompany. Get well soon, Vinny,” the club posted on X.
For now, Bayern must plan without the man brought in to lead a new era in Munich. The fixtures will keep coming. The scrutiny will not ease. But until Kompany is cleared to return, everything else at Germany’s biggest club feels secondary to one question: when will their coach be healthy enough to step back onto the touchline?
