Vincent Kompany Collapses at Bayern Training Ground
Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital on Friday after collapsing at Bayern Munich’s training ground, casting a sudden shadow over the Bundesliga champions’ preparations.
The Bayern head coach, who has been battling a viral infection in recent days, went down while watching a session involving the club’s second team at the club’s training complex. Medical staff moved quickly before he was taken for further treatment.
Bayern later confirmed the incident in a statement, stressing that Kompany is under observation.
“Vincent Kompany had to seek medical treatment on Friday after collapsing during training for FC Bayern's amateurs,” the club said. “The first-team coach had been watching the second team's session. Kompany will undergo thorough examination in the hospital and remain in medical care. For the time being, his coaching staff will manage training and match operations.”
Reports in Germany say his condition is stable, a crucial early reassurance for a club that has already endured a turbulent season on and off the pitch.
The episode comes at the end of a demanding week. Kompany had been too unwell to attend Bayern’s pre-match press conference before their Champions League clash with Arsenal at the Allianz Arena in midweek, sidelined by the viral infection. Yet he still took his place in the dugout on Wednesday night, overseeing a breathless 2-2 draw against the Premier League side.
Now Bayern must quickly adjust. With Kompany remaining in hospital for a thorough check-up, his assistants will take charge of training and matchday duties “for the time being” as the club put his health first.
That includes Sunday’s Bundesliga trip to Freiburg, a fixture that suddenly feels secondary to the wellbeing of the man tasked with leading Bayern’s next era.
