Gattuso Takes Responsibility After Lazio's Coppa Italia Exit
Gennaro Gattuso did not look for excuses. He walked into the cameras after Lazio’s 2-0 home defeat to Serie B side Mantova and took the blame head-on.
“We took a beating, and I'm putting my face on it. Now, heads down and get on with it,” he told Sportmediaset, his words as stark as the scoreline at the Stadio Olimpico.
Just a few months ago, Lazio were in the Coppa Italia final. On Sunday, they crashed out in the Round of 64, outplayed and outworked on their own pitch by a team from the second tier. The contrast could not be sharper, and Gattuso knew it.
“We apologise. Just a few months ago, Lazio were in the final, and today we've been eliminated by a Serie B team,” he said.
The performance left him angry with what he saw in the first half. Lazio created some chances, but never truly imposed themselves.
“We had a few chances, but in the first half we only did things halfway; we weren't aggressive,” Gattuso admitted. “There were chances, so some good things were done. We have to stay united and preserve our sense of belonging.”
The coach pointed to the short time he has had with the squad, but not as a shield. He framed it as context, not justification.
“Believe me, the players are working well, but in 40 days it's difficult to absorb the ideas. Tonight we took a punch in the face, and we felt it. We know the fans aren't happy; we hope to turn things around.”
The “punch in the face” line summed up the mood. Lazio looked stunned, the Olimpico restless, the early-season project already under scrutiny.
Gattuso, though, drew a clear line when the conversation turned to transfers. Lazio have just brought in Davide Frattesi, who made his debut when he came on in the 71st minute, but the coach refused to let the market become a convenient distraction.
“I don't want to talk about it [the transfer market],” he cut in. “Because it would be too easy to focus on what this team is missing.”
The message was blunt. The defeat, the elimination, the anger in the stands – all of it, in Gattuso’s eyes, has to be faced from within.
