Rafael Leao's Uncertain Future at San Siro

Rafael Leao spent the end of last season talking openly about a new adventure. England or Spain. A fresh league, a different stage. At 27, the Portugal international made it clear he was ready to move.

The market has not followed his script.

With two weeks left in the transfer window and no serious offers on the table, the winger now looks increasingly likely to stay at San Siro, at least for the start of the new campaign. His absence from the latest pre-season outing has only deepened the sense of uncertainty around him.

A four-goal show, and one notable absentee

While Leao watched on, Ruben Amorim enjoyed a night to savour in Wroclaw. His side put four past his former club United, a statement win powered by goals from Samuel Chukwueze, Alphadjo Cisse, Goncalo Ramos and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Leao was nowhere near the pitch. He reported a muscle twinge before kick-off and sat the game out, prompting inevitable questions about both his fitness and his future.

Amorim, speaking to TMW, moved quickly to cool fears of a serious injury but stopped short of offering guarantees.

“I don't think it's a serious thing, but I don't know if he'll be ready,” the Portuguese coach admitted.

“He has to fight”

If the injury update was cautious, the message about Leao’s status in the squad was anything but.

Pressed on where the winger now sits in the pecking order and how he fits into an increasingly crowded wide department, Amorim was blunt.

“I don't know, but Leao is one of our players. I've already said that we're happy to have him, he's a valuable player. So we'll see, but he has to fight.”

That last line hung in the air. Because the competition around him is no longer theoretical.

“I think Cisse, with the way that he played, will make things difficult,” Amorim continued. “[Alexis] Saelemaekers has changed positions, it will be tough. We also have [Christian] Pulisic coming back, so we will have a lot of players who will be fighting for that place.”

Cisse’s performance against United, full of intent and end product, has pushed him firmly into the conversation. Saelemaekers, reinvented in a new role, has added tactical flexibility. Pulisic’s impending return only tightens the squeeze.

Leao wanted a new challenge abroad. He may end up finding it much closer to home — in a battle just to keep his place on the wing at San Siro.
