Mourinho’s Midfield Blueprint: Bernardo Silva and Valverde Set to Start
José Mourinho’s first big call at Real Madrid is all but made. For the La Liga curtain-raiser against Espanyol, the new coach is set to build his midfield around a double pivot of Bernardo Silva and Federico Valverde.
Mourinho’s first blueprint
As reported by MARCA and picked up by Madrid Xtra, Mourinho has settled on the pair for the two deeper roles in his 4-2-3-1 structure for the opening league game of the 2026-27 season.
This is no minor detail. The double pivot is expected to be the heartbeat of Mourinho’s new project at the Bernabéu, the zone where control, aggression and creativity must all collide. Three elite options, two spots: Bernardo Silva, Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni. Every choice here sends a message.
For now, the picture is clear. Bernardo plus Valverde.
Bernardo Silva, deep-lying director
Bernardo Silva is being lined up as the main organiser of Madrid’s play, but from deeper territory than he often occupied at Manchester City.
Rather than hugging the right flank, he will drop closer to the centre-backs, receive under pressure and dictate tempo. The Portuguese international offers angles, press resistance and the kind of passing range Mourinho needs if Madrid are to build from the back with authority.
He is expected to own one of those two midfield berths. That part of the equation is not really up for debate.
The real question has been: who stands next to him?
Valverde over Tchouameni – for now
On paper, Tchouameni looks like the classic Mourinho holding midfielder. A natural anchor. Strong in duels, disciplined without the ball, expert at screening the defence. He fits the traditional profile of the destroyer who allows others to create.
Valverde is a different animal. Madrid’s first captain under Mourinho, the Uruguayan brings relentless running, leadership and the ability to cover half the pitch in a single surge. He offers verticality, late arrivals, and a ferocious work rate that can tilt games.
The expectation going into pre-season was simple: one of Mourinho’s earliest big calls would be choosing between Tchouameni’s positional steel and Valverde’s all-action influence.
For Espanyol, that debate has been nudged in one direction.
Valverde is set to start alongside Bernardo, with the captain’s armband and a central role in Mourinho’s first La Liga XI.
Tchouameni’s fitness hands Valverde the edge
This is not a definitive verdict on the long-term hierarchy. It is, above all, a question of readiness.
Tchouameni has not played a single minute in pre-season because of muscular discomfort. While the issue is not described as serious, it has left him trailing Bernardo and Valverde in match rhythm and sharpness.
Reports indicate the Frenchman could still recover in time to make the squad for the Espanyol clash. Even so, after missing the entire pre-season programme, a starting place would be a major gamble. A role from the bench looks far more realistic.
The door, then, swings open for Valverde. Mourinho gains his captain’s leadership, his legs, his voice, and his ability to shuttle between boxes, while Bernardo orchestrates from deep.
It gives Real Madrid a double pivot that can both run and create. The question now is simple: if it clicks on opening night, how hard will it be for anyone—even Tchouameni—to break that partnership apart?
