Genoa's Centre-Forward Search: Taremi and Other Options
Genoa’s search for a centre-forward is turning into a late-window saga, and a familiar Serie A name has now entered the frame: Mehdi Taremi.
Daniele De Rossi wants a focal point for his attack. The preferred profile is clear. Evan Ferguson remains at the top of Genoa’s list, with talks over a loan from Brighton ongoing. The problem sits in the details – and the calendar. The Irish striker is working his way back from ankle surgery, and the uncertainty over his return date is complicating the operation just as Genoa look for immediate guarantees.
So the club are widening the net.
Lorenzo Lucca is another live option. The tall forward is on Napoli’s books, and Genoa will see him up close at Marassi this weekend when the two sides meet. A loan is under discussion, with Lucca viewed as a more accessible target if the Ferguson deal drags on too long.
Amid those negotiations, Taremi’s name has reappeared on the Italian radar.
The Iranian international hit 16 goals for Olympiacos last season after leaving Inter and arrives from a summer that included World Cup action. His record and experience make him an attractive solution for a team that needs goals quickly. He is not, though, the first name on De Rossi’s list. Taremi is described as an option under consideration, with Genoa aware that other clubs are also pushing for his signature.
The search does not stop at Serie A or the Greek stage. Genoa are scanning foreign markets as well, tracking Montenegrin forward Milutin Osmajic at Preston and Moroccan striker Tawfik Bentayeb at Union Touarga. Each profile offers something different, each comes with its own cost and risk.
De Rossi and the club hierarchy are weighing every avenue as the window ticks towards its close. One decision up front will shape the entire look – and ambition – of Genoa’s attack for the season.
