Getafe survived a second-half onslaught at RCDE Stadium to edge Espanyol 2-1 in a tense La Liga Regular Season - 29 clash that tightened the mid-table pack and left the home crowd ruing fine margins and VAR interventions.
Espanyol thought they had the perfect early platform. On 5 minutes a penalty was initially awarded for a foul on Cyril Ngonge, only for VAR to intervene and downgrade the decision, the check ending with “penalty cancelled” and an early roar from the away end. The technology frustrated the hosts again in the 18th minute when another Espanyol attack finished in the net, but Ngonge saw his strike wiped out after a VAR review for “goal cancelled”. When Ramón Terrats believed he had finally broken Getafe’s resistance on 33 minutes, a third VAR call – again for “goal cancelled” – underlined how fine the margins were in a first half Espanyol largely controlled without reward.
Getafe, by contrast, were ruthless with their moments. On 34 minutes Jose Bordalas made an early defensive tweak, as M. Martin came on for D. Rico, adding energy and bite in midfield. The change helped steady the visitors, and they struck decisively right on the stroke of half-time.
First Half
In the 45th minute, a set-piece situation brought the breakthrough. D. Duarte scored, assisted by L. Milla, as the centre-back rose to meet a delivery and guided his header beyond M. Dmitrovic. Barely had Espanyol regrouped when Getafe doubled their lead, again in the 45th minute. This time roles reversed: M. Arambarri scored, assisted by D. Duarte, the midfielder arriving on the edge of the box to steer a low effort into the corner after Espanyol failed to clear. Two clinical actions from a side that had only 10 total shots all afternoon turned a frustrated home performance into a half-time crisis.
Second Half
The second half began with Manolo Gonzalez acting decisively. At 46 minutes, R. Fernandez Jaen came on for C. Ngonge, adding a more direct focal point up front. Almost immediately, the game’s rhythm shifted. Getafe picked up another booking on 46 minutes, Zaid Romero cautioned for a foul, a sign of the visitors’ increasingly reactive, combative stance.
As Espanyol cranked up the pressure, Getafe leaned into their dark arts. Djené was booked for time wasting on 61 minutes, followed by Mario Martín’s yellow for the same offence on 64 minutes. The hosts, who would finish with 66% possession, 433 total passes and 12 corners, were camped in Getafe territory by then.
On 65 minutes, Gonzalez rolled the dice further. P. Milla came on for R. Terrats, and R. Sanchez came on for O. El Hilali, adding fresh legs and more thrust down the right. The impact was immediate and transformational. In the 68th minute, Espanyol finally got the goal their pressure merited: R. Fernandez Jaen scored, assisted by R. Sanchez, the substitute striker finishing clinically after a low ball from the overlapping full-back cut through Getafe’s back line. With 14 of their 15 shots coming inside the box and an expected_goals figure of 1.75, Espanyol’s attacking profile spoke of a side that created more than enough to get something from the match.
The siege intensified. On 78 minutes, Jofre came on for T. Dolan, and M. Rubio came on for C. Riedel, pushing Espanyol into an even more aggressive shape. Getafe, who mustered 10 shots with an expected_goals of 1.51, retreated into a low block, relying on D. Soria’s four goalkeeper saves and a series of blocks – they finished with one blocked shot at the other end – to protect their lead.
Bordalas responded in the 84th minute, first seeing S. Boselli booked for time wasting, then introducing him moments later as S. Boselli came on for M. Arambarri to add fresh defensive resolve. The closing stages were fractious and fragmented. Luis Milla was cautioned for a foul on 90+1', Pere Milla saw yellow for argument on 90+3', and Edu Expósito was booked for a foul on 90+7'. Deep into stoppage time, Kiko Femenía joined the long Getafe disciplinary list with a yellow for time wasting on 90+8', emblematic of a side that finished with 20 fouls and seven bookings.
Despite Espanyol’s territorial dominance, 5 shots on goal and D. Soria’s four saves, Getafe’s defensive grit and efficiency in both boxes proved decisive. M. Dmitrovic, with two saves and a goals_prevented figure of 1, could do little about either first-half strike.
In the standings, Espanyol’s 2-1 defeat leaves them on 37 points from 30 matches, their goals_for rising to 37 and goals_against to 46, further denting a goal difference now at -9 and extending a poor run reflected in their form line. Getafe climb to 41 points from 30 games, with goals_for up to 27 and goals_against to 32, improving their goal difference to -5 and strengthening their position in the upper half of La Liga after another classic Bordalas away performance built on discipline, opportunism and just enough chaos.
