Gibbs-White Replaces Injured Palmer in England Squad
Morgan Gibbs-White is set to be drafted back into the England squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures, with Cole Palmer expected to withdraw through injury.
The Nottingham Forest midfielder is in line to replace the Chelsea forward in Thomas Tuchel’s group for the extended international break, according to BBC reports, after Palmer suffered a minor setback.
Palmer’s timing could hardly be worse.
The 24-year-old had just completed 90 minutes in Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat at Brentford on Friday, continuing a strong start to his club season. After a summer on the outside looking in following his omission from the World Cup squad, he had become central to Chelsea’s early campaign, starting six of their seven matches and producing four goals and two assists.
This call-up was supposed to be his reset with England. Instead, it’s another interruption.
Tuchel had brought Palmer back into the senior fold determined to give him another platform on the international stage. Before the injury, the England manager made no attempt to hide the challenge in front of the forward, insisting Palmer had a “point to prove” and needed “to step up” to “keep his shirt and justify the nomination.”
Palmer has not played for his country since a 1-0 friendly defeat to Japan in March. Now that wait stretches on again.
His fitness record has long been under the microscope. A recurring groin problem disrupted much of his 2025-26 campaign. Enzo Maresca, then his manager at Chelsea and now in charge at Manchester City, publicly questioned the situation at the time, saying it did not make sense that the issue continued to linger.
This latest blow changes the picture for Gibbs-White.
Initially left out of Tuchel’s squad, the 26-year-old Forest playmaker was, by the manager’s own admission on Friday, extremely close to making the original cut. Palmer’s withdrawal nudges the door fully open.
Gibbs-White has started the domestic season sharply, with one goal and two assists in five league matches. His last England appearance came in a 3-0 friendly win over Wales in October 2025, a night that hinted at a longer international run that never quite materialised.
Now he gets another chance.
He will step into an England camp facing a punishing schedule. Tuchel’s side are staring at four matches in a demanding block over the coming weeks, a stretch that will test both depth and resilience.
England open by hosting World Cup winners Spain at Wembley on Saturday, 26 September, a marquee fixture that will set the tone for the break.
They then head to the Czech Republic on 29 September, before continuing the away swing with a trip to face Croatia on 3 October. The run ends back on home soil, with the Czechs visiting again on 6 October.
For Palmer, it’s another pause in a stop-start international story. For Gibbs-White, it’s the kind of unexpected opening that can change a career.
