Wales Faces Triple Setback with Wilson, Broadhead, and Darlow Withdrawals

Craig Bellamy’s Nations League plans have been ripped up before a ball is kicked, with Wales losing three key squad members ahead of a brutal League A schedule.

Harry Wilson, Nathan Broadhead and Karl Darlow have all pulled out, forcing a late reshuffle just days before Thursday’s opener away to Portugal in Lisbon.

Wilson, Wales’ creative heartbeat in recent windows and now at Leeds, had been a major doubt with a quad problem and has not recovered in time. Broadhead, the Wrexham forward who had been pushing for a bigger role, was also expected to miss out and now does so with a thigh injury.

The third blow cuts just as deep. Darlow, Bellamy’s first-choice goalkeeper, withdraws despite a significant week in his club career: a Manchester United debut in the EFL Cup and a place on the bench for their Premier League draw with Fulham on Sunday. Any hope that momentum might carry him into this international window has been dashed.

Bellamy has turned to experience and promise to plug the gaps. Leicester City’s veteran keeper David Cornell is drafted in, still waiting for his first senior cap. Huddersfield Town forward Joe Taylor also steps up, another uncapped option in attack. Reading midfielder Charlie Savage joins them, adding energy and versatility in the middle of the pitch.

None of the three has played for the senior side. All of them may now be closer than expected to serious minutes.

The schedule offers no time for sympathy. After Portugal in Lisbon on Thursday, Wales head to Copenhagen to face Denmark next Sunday. Then comes Norway in Cardiff on Thursday, 1 October, before the Danes make the return trip to the Welsh capital three days later.

League A rarely forgives weakness. Bellamy must now find out, quickly, whether this patched-up squad can survive its first real examination.
